So here's the problem. I don't have a debit card. I'm just wondering if you can buy steam cards like you can buy XBL or PSN cards at stores and stuff. I can't remember if I've seen any or not.

You can buy pre-paid credit cards and use them. It's sort of like that...only with real money.

I don't think you can.

However, I use steam without using any sort of credit/debit card .. 'cos steam accepts Paypal.
(I do transfers from my bank account into Paypal, which takes over a week to process)

In Toronto most supermarkets have either of these below which work fine with steam. As for steam specific cards, I don't think so.

You should be able to purchase a bank card (a gift card) which is a single charge for the amount of money you buy it for, which you can then use as a debit card. My question though, why can you not simply get a debit card and only place money in that account when you want to buy something?

I know for a fact that they accept Visa Vanilla gift cards. If you get that one don't forget to put in your zip code on the website or it wont work. They have a huge rack of all sorts of gift cards at my drug store, they probably have them in grocery stores too.

I take it you're not old enough to get a debit card?

Visa have these wonderful new things that behave like credit cars but are linked to your bank account, so you can purchase items off Steam but it behaves as if you'd used a normal bank card, debiting your account rather than generating a credit card bill.

That's the closest you're going to get to "gift cards" for steam. There's no store-bought or cash-bought way to get games on Steam.

Though some games when you buy them in the store will add to your steam games list. That list isn't terribly long though.

I could get a debit card, but I don't have a job right now except for mowing neighbors lawns which I get paid in cash, so getting something like a gift card just seems easier then transferring funds, at least until I get an actual job.

No, Valve don't offer anything analogous to Microsoft's Xbox Live cards, although this idea does get regularly suggested on the Steam forums.

Many banks offer free checking accounts, which you can tie a debit card to.

Depends on where you live. Here in Ireland you could buy an O2 money card that you buy credit for and I'm willing to bet some company provides the same service where you come from. It's linked only to the credit so even if it's compromised the card can only give them as much money as you have on it. I would only buy it as I use it and keep a euro on the card.

As it has been said above, pre-paid visa cards will work just fine.

Alternatively if you have a good friend who does have a card and a steam account you could just front them the money and have them gift you the game, a bit crude, but it'll get the job done.
