does the transformation hurt?

In lots of movies, games, and shows, when people transform, (either to an animal, a different person or, well, anyting) they seem to be in great pain, and yet in other media they seem to morph all the time and not react at all. So do you think transforming in any way would hurt? If so alot or a little?

Take a look at the transformation in American Werewolf in London. Something like that had to have caused some serious pain.

It depends on the type of transformation.
If it's shapeshifting in the way I imagine it in my mind, no pain at all.
If it's sprouting wings and spider legs out of my back, I'm sure the rending of flesh and bone would be a little painful.

Remember growing pains from your bones stretching out a bit? Imagine if your entire skeletal structure was rapidly morphing and rearranging itself in the matter of a minute or two. Yeah, I think that'd hurt.

I would assume bones rearanging, and you gaining or losing flesh, fur, etc would hurt like a *****.

Well, since the body generally doesn't rearrange itself like that, I'd put it somewhere between "aaaaaarrgghh" and "oh gods please let me die".

Hm...I never actually thought about it but I have to agree with this guy.

It makes perfect sense. So yeah, I'm going with "hurts like a *****."

I suppose it depends if transformation is your only power, or if you are also blessed with some kind of regeneration power as well.

i'm not saying i disagree with you but think about mystique from x-men, or vampires. they do it all the time and seem to be unaffected.

I think that if your body is able to undergo a superhuman transformation, it can tell the brain to stop registering pain.

In the graphic novel 52, when members of Intergang transformed into beasts they didn't seem to hurt...

There was a description of "wood snapping" being heard...and it didn't look comfortable...

...but they never looked like/ said they were in pain...great read by the way...

I'd imagine having your entire body rearranged and every bone in it break and regrow within a minute would hurt like hell.

Saying it hurts would, quite frankly, be an understatement. Undergoing any type of change in skeletal structure, as well as growing anything new or losing some extraneous parts, as well as changing, bending, stretching, and reshaping your entire musculature and nervous system would, indeed, feel like molten hellfire coursing through your body.

It would probably tingle, but evolution might lessen the shock of it.

If it did cause pain, then the pain would probably be so great that you would momentarily go into shock. But then again, if magic or something like that was involved, there might not be any pain at all.

In the book 'Metamorphosis' by Franz Kafka, a man tranforms into a giant insect in his sleep and experiences nothing but some troubled dreams. Then again, theres the transformation in American Werewolf in London. I guess it depends...on what? I don't know.

I would imagine the gods would actually grant you that wish. Seriously, while the brain does have a gating mechanism for pain, hopefully rendering you unconscious during such a transformation (after a few seconds of mind-crushing agony, of course), there is a very real chance of death due to, say, stress-induced cardiomyopathy.
