Does the Xenomorph in Alien: Isolation play fair?

By the question in the topic, I mean to ask whether the Xenomorph genuinely stalks the player through the game, or if it simply cheats to where it wants to be. For instance, if it disappears into a vent, does it actually have to travel (out of player sight, but within the level) to the next ambush, or does it simply appear just off-screen next time so it can jump out at you?

I'm not usually much of a horror game fan, but the praise this game has been getting may cause me to make an exception. I'm curious how fair the game is in this regard, because if the game isn't really the cat-and-mouse game it appears to be it would likely become more frustrating than scary after a while.

I've seen it moving around on the motion tracker even when it's gone to/in a part of the level you can't go to, so I'd assume it does have to physically move from point A to point B at least to some extent.

Yes and no. motion tracker can tell you a fair bit. If the monster is on radar and away from you your safe. If on the other hand, its not on tracker, and you start running past vents, expect trouble.

No, but it is a Xenomorph, it doesn't play by our rules. :p

That being said still an amazing fun game even with the small little frustrations that can come from the insta-kills.

Hrmm... I think I'd be okay if it cheated a bit. Immersion would probably make me forget about such things, as it did when I was shitting myself about Nemesis.

I think it teleports when it is inside the vents, but there is no way to tell and it wouldn't make much of a difference if it moved through the vents or teleported. It has access to dozens of secret paths. That is a huge advantage.

My question is, does the A.I of the Xenomorph adapt to your actions? The developers hyped that a lot, but is it true? Like, if you spend a lot of time in the vents, does the Xenomorph start crawling around in them more? I think the developers may be BSing.

I can't really speak to the vent example but I have noticed that if you stick to an area for a decent time the alien seems to frequent that area more often. The alien does seem to have to physically move from Point A to Point B although again not sure when it comes to vents. I will say you have to have a fair bit of patience to play this game. Not only that, you can't be too afraid to get caught or you'll progress very slowly.

For the purposes of balanced gameplay the Xeno does teleport and there do seem to be times it is restricted from showing up. For example, it's highly unlikely you'll encounter the xeno before the first cutscene you see it in, but after that, whenever it's not on motion tracker range, it will teleport to different areas like the robits in Five Nights at Freddie's do, and then move around that area. It does seem to teleport to areas you are in a lot more often than areas you rarely go to, but in a local area, it will move around actively for a bit, then teleport somewhere else. If it teleports into your area, it will usually teleport into the area in a region your motion tracker can't spot yet, though this is not a guarantee - I've even heard of times where it just spawns right on top of you, but this is an incredibly unlikely event to experience.

Oh it is ABSOLUTELY true. The AI for the Alien is scary smart. It will learn to recognize that distractions are just that extremely quickly (thrown flares will distract it exactly once). Also if you stay in one general area and keep making noise (such as by ducking into lockers and cabinets) the Alien will figure out that you are hiding inside and kill you. Honestly just how freaking Smart the Alien is has officially made Alien: Isolation my personal scariest game of all time easily bumping Amnesia: The Dark Descent out of the top spot.

Mm, yes and no.
I've died to it numerous times on hard, it moves where it wants when it wants to and I can see very few strings being pulled. I remember a section where you have to go into a room to do stuff and then into a vent later. I died in the room the vent led to a couple times then on my third or fourth try, it was automatically in the first room you're supposed to go to, it really surprised me.
And I've been playing on hard then I watched a friend play on easy. *Maybe* this is just how events unfolded but the Alien seemed to stay tighter to me than it did to my easy playing friend, it gave her way more breathing space than it gave me so the only stings I really see being pulled is that maybe there's some sort of active radius around the player and that radius is bigger or smaller depending on the difficulty.
I don't know, it's a very free-flowing AI, probably the best I've ever seen personally, and while I've seen the above circumstance and it showing up much earlier than I thought it would a couple times (which was awesome) and dying to it a freaking lot, there's not a single death I've died that I would call "unfair".
And yes, for some, it is frustrating. I'm firmly in the "this is how vicious and Alien's supposed to be" camp and I love it. You have to either be pretty into the first Alien movie or a slightly more patient player than most to really enjoy Alien: Isolation, it's *perfect* for me but it really isn't for some.
