ive seen a few people troll on about how the topic isnt important, or that its stupid or makes no difference or crap like that, but heres the thought ive been kicking around for the past half hour...

Does there really need to be a point? Perhaps ive got it all wrong, but the whole idea of a forum is just so u can converse/debate for the sheer joy of having human contact? I didnt think anyone ever really needed to say anything, just talking is kinda therepeutic, thoughts anyone?

Life is proof, there doesn't need to be a point. But for most people one does help.

A point, even a frivolous one, is important. However, every topic has a point, even if it is just to waste time or get a laugh, which, in my opinion, is just as important as the politically or philosophically charged ones.

Someone post a topic about Sheep Olympics!

Using your own words only worded differently, the point of each thread is to converse/debate the topic. So yes each thread does need to have a point but the point can be as arbitrary/stupid as you wish.

Some people will disagree with this but that's this threads point, to argue if each thread needs to have a purpose.

A point keeps one in focus. If there's no point to it, one might as well just pull his pants down and stand in the middle of an intersection and guide the traffic with a Belgium waffle and an empty bottle of beer. A lack of point, sends the sheep astray, and they will eventually end up in the wolf's jaws.

God I hate Friday mornings.

Well sometimes posting what seems to be a useless topic can lead onto much better discussion within that thread

Pointless stuff has a point. It usually illicits a chuckle.
You can't spell "random" without "tangerine swordfish disco car".

I think that having a point isn't vital but it is sort of important, you need to have some sort of structure in responses or you just get garbled crap from some people, but I like threads like "the up late and bored thread" though no structure has been specified, people usually say interesting things and it doesn't usually dissolve into crap. But if it gets a giggle or a chuckle it's good no matter how pointless it is.

debates are fun

until they go too far and it turns into an insulting match :(

if i had to have a point for everything i do, i'd never get anything done :p

Forums are amazing examples of, well, funny arguments. Weather or not they have a point, i have a laugh.
