article: http://www.therecord.com/news/local/article/516129--uw-shuts-down-student-car-team-over-racy-photograph

So the long and the short of it is the University suspended the team from the competition they built this car for claiming a misuse of university property because they didn't have permission to take the photograph (yeah right?).

Its not even like this photo is overly, (to use the terrible pun in the article) "racy" hell it's actually pretty good advertising for the school, hey look its a hot chick posing by the car which our students built, oh did we mention that this chick is also pretty smart as she is on the DAMN TEAM THAT BUILT IT.

I would probably have a different opinion if it was a team members girl friend or some random woman they hired.

So just wondering if I'm the one with the warped opinion or if it is actually the university?

sounds to me like someone in the school administration had a beef with them and was just looking for an excuse to shut them down. "Robot house!!!!!"

It does sound odd to me that you need permission for a picture, and I can't find any other reason that was stated, so it is starting to sound like sexism was involved.

?I knew that particular student, and she had been thinking about whether she could be feminine and an engineer at the same time,? said Lambert.

Apparently the school says not.

Their reasoning is pretty bogus. Using the photography area without explicit permission? Really? How many people have used it without the wrath of the school coming down on them? Or the computer rooms? Or anything.

Well it's only a temporary suspension of the students car racing team, not the students themselves. It was meant as a punishment because the students were representing the university in an international level, and to take such a photograph is very unprofessional and will reflect badly on the university. Also the ban is only till June, so it's not that severe.

true and true but if that were (probably is) the actual reasoning why not just admit that this is not how they want the school and the engineering faculty represented? it's a fair reason we are reputedly one of the best engineering schools in the world.
(well Canada at least, but holy hell they don't let us forget it)

love the name by the way

Would I suspend a team for it? No, not really. That being said, keep in mind that they are being represented internationally, and when you represent at that wide a range, you are bound to run into Old People. And not every Old Person is as open as Nanny Ogg. And it only takes offending one or two to get in serious trouble.

Oh well. If they don't want people taking unauthorized photos in the building, they should put a plaque up or something stating so.
