I choose to mostly ignore your disinterest in Japan.
See how it works. Were bombarded with information every day.You choose how much of what you take in and pay attention to.
Your not a victim.

It's not that I don't CARE, exactly, I just don't want to hear about it all the time but nobody seems to want to shut up about it. It just makes me feel really guilty because whenever I tell someone "can you shut up about Japan, for god sake!" they treat me like I'm Hitler all of a sudden and I feel kind of bad about my thinking about this.
It's a flaw in you persona, but it don't make you a horrible person. It's when someone think Japan deserved it because of Pearl Harbour they're on the slippery road to total assholes.

Here's a rule of thumb for you and everyone who asks this very question: If you need to ask "Am I bad for this?", the answer is yes.

It's understandable. There is a point where you go 'ok yeah I know it's horrible, you don't need to remind me'. As long as you still do care it doesn't make you a asshole or anything like that.

Personally, unless something effects me directly, I don't care about it.

Some might say I am a horrible person, I would call them a hypocrite. Now, I don't know how many people have died or how much money is going to be spent to correct it, what I do know is more people die in the third world than in Japan due to this and yet nobody gives much of a damn about it.

Sure, we may all throw the odd pocket change into a collection bucket and get a shot of happiness but how much did that 51P really help?

OK, so some places have dictators taking all the money but why hasn't he been stopped from doing that, then help the people? It's not like America and England are agaisnt going somewhere and killing a leader ... What UK bankers get paid in bonuses in one year could build a city in the third world and yet were all blah-say about that.

So to summarize, clean up the third world so people aren't dying of starvation, while people eat themselves to 500 pounds, then come and talk and talk to me about how bad Japan is.

We can do something about the third world we can't do much about Japan except clean up, yet would rather help clean up than save the third world.

I gotta say this before I make my peace. If any you tell this man he's a horrible person, then you are truly lacking on perception of what's really going on here. You do not understand that you have become mindless sheep for the media to prey upon. Anyone with half a brain knows the devastation that the Tohoku region has suffered. You know hundreds if not thousands are dead. You know even more are without basic necessities.

Do not fuel the panic fire. Do not give my mother another reason to flip out and demand I dismiss a dream job I had worked for 6 years to obtain. Give the people of Japan some credit by practicing what they have done in the face of disaster. Remain calm, do not wallow in mourning, and give. Give what you can. I love the people who's country I am a guest in. I donated what I could, and I hope in time I can unearth a small portion of the mess with my own two hands. But I will not fret, I will not sit around and cry, and I will certainly NOT listen to what other people say. I am a primary source when it comes to this tragedy. Did I feel the earthquake hit? Yes. Have I lost anything material in this devastation? No. Have I mentally suffered? Yeah. I struggled to make sure my 8 friends up North were alive, and the 3 days of aftershocks kept me awake at night. But I will not sit around and feel sorry for people.

I am sick of people telling other people like ReservoirAngel that he's a bad person because he's sick of people saying how horrible it is. He is 100% in the right. The event has happened, hundreds of thousands are miserable, and people are in need right now. But I can tell you right now, every man, woman, and child in Japan doesn't want you to feel sorry for them. They want you to help them.

So stop walking around trying to show people how much you care about them by repeating every day how sorry you are for them. Shut your mouth and do something that matters.
It's weird that people just flat out ignore what you say, and continue the thread.
Thank you for enlightening me on the situation.

As for TS:
Just mind your wording, otherwise it's ok.
I hate how media feeds on disasters. Norway was nearly on the brink of collapsing by the mere mention of "swine flu" a while back, all because media hyped it the fuck up.

I suppose it doesn't make you a bad person it didn't directly affect you so you feel that it has nothing to do with you.

thats my guess.

No, it does not make you a horrible person. I can see how it can get irritating hearing about Japan every five minutes (or less). Just donate some money (if you want to) and ignore anyone who is talking about it, after all you did that is really the most an average person can do.

They're lucky in the sence of we donate millions and millions and millions (about 75million already yesterday?) to them every year, we won't be doing that with anyone else.
Though it is true that we do give Africa billions every year, I am fairly sure it is relative in terms of how much they need this aid.

Also, I'm fairly sure that Japan has said they do not want monetary aid and would prefer man power from foreign countries.

You're not a horrible person for this (I can't say you're not a horrible person as a whole because I don't know if you're secretly burning orphanages). You may come across as insensitive, though, you may want to word it differently or drop out of the conversation for a while in order not to hurt anyone's feelings.

Does it make ME a bad person that I'm fed up of people complaining about how much they don't care about the Japan earthquake?

If someone doesn't care about the earthquake, surely they can comprehend that WE don't care about their opinion on it?

I should have replied directly first:

No you're not really horrible because since tuesday nothing has really happened at the plant, just a bunch of bullshit arguing about arbitrary scales and where radiation may go if it gets out at a certain time of the day with a certain wind pattern and whether or not there's water in the cooling pools when neither the US or Japanese government can actually see into it.

There's a storm of bullshit surrounding this, it's better not to get dragged into it because so many different irrational fears are being played on by a lot of media organizations.

If you're worried about Karma, just donate to the red cross or something, honestly the biggest problem is the nuclear plant because any aid we in the south send up north needs to circumvent Fukushima prefecture. So they need to go north then west, then north then east; not very effective ne?

While it's probably not the most politically correct way of responding, I can see where you're coming from. Because of the way that social media has pervaded our lives, it has now become "trendy" to constantly talk about whatever disaster/relief effort/latest destruction has occurred.

This "danger trending" occurred during the Iran Elections, the Haiti Relief Efforts, the BP Oil Spill, The Chilean Miners and now is trending around the Japan Earthquake.

It's probably best, if it annoys you, to just keep calm, keep quiet, express sympathies if asked, and change the subject. Otherwise you're going to get an earful.

@OP

TBH, there was a time when I would have called you a f***er.. but now I believe its your own personal right to not care, all of us at some point don't care about someones pain, suffering etc... hell some of us revel in another's fall when it suits us.. but thats off point..

Now obviously if you're asking people to shut up about it, yes its a bit rude but true I also do get annoyed when everyone talks about the current suffering of some peeps that live far away in a zone thats known to have these kind of natural disasters..

Conclusion: You're pushing controversy with the majority of people but I don't think it makes you horrible..

Sounds like you are just being honest, which is more than most people can say. From my experience, people only seem to care about something so that they can look good. I am not saying everyone is like this, just a lot of them.

I started an account just to answer this question...

I live in Japan. I live in Mie prefecture in a tiny town called Komono though the JET program.

I am so...sick...of the sensationalism that CNN, Fox and EVERY OTHER FREAKING NEWS STATION IS HAMMING TO YOU PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the flat out LIES about current circumstances!

I couldn't get my family and friends to shut up about making me come home. I live 300 miles away from that mess.

Is it bad? Yeah. I donated about $103 bucks to a local fundraiser to help out the Tohoku region, but people are taking it WAY to freaking FAR! Every day it's "I'm fine...I'm fine...we had a mag 3 aftershock last night...No I'm not irradiated. No I'm not going to die."

"BUT IT'S NOT WORTH YOUR LIFE!" Yeah... which is why my life isn't in danger. I'm not gonna punk out of my job because there's a huge disaster to the north of me. That's like living in Florida, and packing up your life, job, family, everything, just because there was one bad hurricane.

That's another thing. I just heard from my family that Iodine pills are sold out in the states... WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You really think with the way the wind currents work Cali is gonna suffer some huge fallout?

JUST!!!! UGRHGLHJPOHJJWKEHFJODSHJFKEJGKHPIJSDHNFJKSN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do your part. If you wanna help, donate. It's what the Tohoku region really needs. If you wanna fly over here in a month and help clean up, that's awesome. I'm taking nenkyu from work to do the same, or I hope I can. But for the love of FREAKING GOD! Stop FREAKING OUT!!! The people here have kept a cool head though and though. They queue up for food. They shelter people who have none. Everything has been done orderly. If these people aren't freaking the heck out about this WHY SHOULD YOU?! Give, Pray, Help. Don't spasm cause CNN told you the Japanese are "On the brink of despair." and "Are revolting against the government." Don't be sheep. Don't feed the news trolls.

To answer your question. No you are not a bad person. In fact, I wish people back home were just a little bit more like you.
/thread

I wish our society wasn't so bent on proving the world is ending and all that sensationalism. Stop watching the news. Their ratings are what they care about. I have not watched anything news related other than Daily Show and Colbert report... and only cause they are reasonable and make fun of all the news networks.

OT: Don't over-react and yell and tell 'em to shut up. You will always look like a jerk that way. And anyone calling anyone else "Hitler" is a fucking idiot anyway. Just knowing and understanding the crisis is good enough. If you care, donate. That is all we can do.

I hate hearing constant bad news too. I don't want to hear about death and carnage all over the world
