I was recently thinking about this and thought it would make for some good discussion. You always hear about celebrities who donate to charity, whether this is for tax breaks or because they really care, we don't know. Then there are the cases where celebrities have never donated to a specific charity/organization and when someone in their family or even themselves have come down with some sort of illness/ailment, they are all for it.

Example, Christopher Reeve. He fell off a horse and then he became the biggest donator towards stem-cell research. I don't think I find this exactly wrong, since if I was in the same position, I would be throwing my mass amounts of cash at something that could get me to walk again, but do you guys think its selfish?

I personally don't have enough funds to actually make a considerable donation to any sort of organization, but I think if I did, I would. I guess thats just the kind of person I am.

So escapists, how do you feel about situations like this, and do you/would you ever consider donating?

If key political figures suddenly contracted AIDS, I'm sure a cure would show up rather quickly. There's nothing that raises awareness of a problem more than being directly affected by it.

Some charities I'm all for like St. Judes and I donate stuff to Goodwill all the time. I don't do it for the tax break I do it because I like to think that my small act can help someone else. If you give something to expect something in return to me that means you don't understand the meaning of charity.

It could be considered selfish, but what about people that don't donate to charities (ie: me)? They would be considered selfish too, for hoarding their moneys!
