It is passed, people can finally be openly gay, lesbian, or straight. Maybe American is growing up from being a boys club. I am happy about this but I am scared that it might make things worse, it depends how may people serve openly now in my opinion, instead of still hiding. Unless every closet person come out and says "hey" The nothing is accomplished. I serve right now in the military I am gay, and I am happy this has happened. I just fear there is to much hate right now to be open about it in the military with out back up.

A bit step forward in thinking but a small step in the grand scheme of things. Now we have to show just because we are who he are and in the military it does not mean we wanna have sex with every one, we have not yet and we will not now.

Is this a good thing that it happened or not, only time will tell. What is every ones opinion on this is this good, bad, or just another thing going on in the world that is no big deal?

Edit: Side not happy holidays, I like Christmas but it is the only one out there.

You always could have been openly straight in the military...

And personally, I would rather not jeopardize the country than stick up for a gay rights topic many didn't care about. However, the military believed gay/lesbian people announcing their sexuality was jeopardizing anything, so that's fine with me it's going way.

If that doesn't make sense, basically, military security comes before people's feelings, unless they can both exist without harming the military.

The majority of the United States military actually supported being openly gay in the military. Despite the stereotype that the military is a very conservative group of people they supported a lot of left-winged open-minded legislation in the past. It was the military that completely got rid of segregation before the actual states. I think its easier to see human rights after you stop thinking of your fellow man as bystanders or a statistic and start seeing people as brothers.

It doesn't matter who they are, their gender, race, creed, religion, or sexuality. If they're your squad they're yours and you do anything and everything to stick up for them.

That said I know WAY to many people who are old timers in the military and would be way too hateful. As far as I can tell nobody in my unit could possibly out themselves around here without taking some SERIOUS shit.

I don't see this statistic of soldiers being left-wing minded... at all...

I also didn't mind don't ask don't tell don't harass... because it meant that we weren't supposed to give a shit about whether or not people were gay... we weren't going to ask about it. But I haven't read what this new thing means fully.

Well if this builds further trust in the military and helps a minority group gain strength in the public eye YAY! It is about time we moved on to a new group to insult and exclude. I have gotten sick of the homophobia and anti immigrant things in my area. Let?s set a witch-hunt on magazines like People and all other magazines that sell false images of men or women.

Always nice to see when America goes back to our political roots and works on positive change rather than stagnant fear.

I don't think that's entirely fair based on people i've met who are/were in the Military, but... I could have just met only the good ones.

If nothing else, this is a good change and I am glad something is happening, it is funny how I am the first to say anything about this so far, I figured it would be a boiling pot in the forums and that there would be major things going on. Funny.

EDIT: It is funny this feels like a gift and I thought nothing big would happen this month.

It was never a hot issue for me, but it baffled me how somebody outing themselves would jeopardize security in the military. I mean really, are people that petty as to get hung up on somebody's sexuality, losing all trust and getting perforated by bullets because of that?
Thankfully, this shows that isn't the case.

What gets me is people keep making way too big a deal out of it, like as soon as this gets passed, gays who serve would be forced to out themselves. I'm sure if unit cohesion really depends on somebody hiding their sexuality, again I don't see how, they'd use good judgment and do what they thought was best.

Atleast you admit this some people would rather just let things go. Sexuality should no matter but it some how does and it makes life difficult. It seems no one is willing to trust a gay guy unless it is a girl or another gay guy here, and vice versa. It is sad that it seems that it is just a bunch of kids running around acting like they can catch "the gay", like it was some sort of disease.
