Don't Expect Xbox One's Successor For At Least Ten Years

It's hilarious that people think that how long this console lasts will have anything to do with how long MS wants it to last.

The state of the market and the economy at large will be the dominating factors for when MS releases the Xbox 4. If MS struggles this generation and we see an actual economic recovery, we'll see one as soon as they think they can get away with it.

Come on, Microsoft, haven't you ever watched Star Trek? Say it'll last five years, then everyone will be amazed when you keep it around for seven or eight, like you're probably planning to do.

I do need to ask something, have Sony and Microsoft just swapped their staff for this generation. Ok excluding the DRM stuff Microsoft is acting almost exactly like Sony was acting when it came to the PS3
Funny that you mention that, Phil Harrison was part of the PS3 team...

Must...resist...urge...to...snark

Damn it. Failed

*ahem* So does this mean that my Xbox 360 has to last another decade?

Captcha: What's El Tabador's sexiest feature? How about the part where he randomly disconnects my phone without adequate reasons?

Desperately trying not to think about all the horrible ways in which my life will probably have changed in ten years.

I mean, I might have kids!

Shit.

I dont mind, sort of. While the consoles remain stagnant, PCs will continue increasing he technological gap between the two.

Aww, that's cute, he thinks there's going to be another X-Box after the One.

Seriously though, I've heard this claim before.

Normally such news would be no interest for me. A console cycle ends when it ends.

However...aren't the Xbox division under intense pressure from the rest of the corporation to finally turn a profit on the Xbox?
They lost $5 billion dollars on the line, and only made up $1 billion dollars overall.

Especially considering the fact that they went under some intensive reconstruction within the staff, the new CEO seems to have little interest in their console. Especially when it hasn't turned them any profit, and they are starting to bleed in other places.

They may not even last 10 years.

OH SNAP!!

These companies just don't learn. Oh well, once the Steambox starts ripping into both the Xbone and the PS4s profit margins maybe some of these guys will pull their heads out of their collective rectums.

Harrison says that the much touted "cloud" features of the new console will be tantamount to this evolution, predicting that it will become a key component in AI
The Xbone is going to have AI? I can see that turning out just like the Terminator movies except with considerably more advertising and a little less destruction of humankind.

I'm pretty sure they said this about the PS3 when it first came out and look how that worked out. It'll be pretty cool if it does last that long though.
Exactly. They had like a 12 year plan. And seven years later, we have a successor.

Of course they're going to say it now, though. They want people to feel secure in their purchase of the XBone.

Photo-realistic graphics, unless they find a magical and super easy way to make them, will NEVER be a reality.
I strongly disagree.

Each successive generation of software and hardware adds a layer of aggregation and increase in processing power that is steadily making photo-realistic graphics a reality. What you can do very easily with today's development tools is as close to ascii graphics as reading pig entrails is to modern weather forecasting. The graphics we have today were simply unthinkable 15 years ago.

Today, photo realistic graphics would be ungodly expensive and require significant development time. 10-20 years from now? Very likely. "Someday"? Inevitable.

Personally, I'd argue that we're in the 10-20 years range right now simply because utilization of computer based graphics is becoming so widespread that it will accelerate their availability.

Beat me to it. I'd agree that the biggest barrier when it comes to bigger and better graphics is the cost, but it does become easier and cheaper over time. I mean, with Unity I could make a game with PS2 level graphics right now for next to nothing (if I knew how to use the blasted thing) and it'll only become easier and cheaper from there. I'll bet we're only a few short years away from seeing photorealistic graphics for the first time, and only a couple decades at most after that before it becomes cheap enough to be practical and thus becomes industry wide.

Didn't sony say something similar about ps3? It was supposed to have lifespan of 10 years thanks to its mega processing power that could bend space and time. I know it's PR but they should really stop this bullshit immediately and start being realistic about their claims.
They said 10 year life cycle. The PS3 will live on until 2016 just like the PS2 lived on for years after the PS3 released.

I'm sure that by lifespan they also mean actual support from publishers. It's true ps2 lived after sony changed its flagship product but it didn't receive any big games and hardly ever got any attention in the gaming press. It will be the same for ps3 I wouldn't bet on long support for that console, Sony spent lots of cash on ps4 and compared to MS they are in worse financial position they will have to motivate their clients to migrate to the new product, hence in my opinion ps3 will become irrelevant soon.

They probably meant that they would be manufacturing it for atleast 10 years and I think that will happen.
