It's always confused me when I'll be playing with my friends in some videogame, whether it's an FPS, or an RTS, or even an MMO and I try to play really hard to be better than them...and I end up playing worse than usual. This was even more prevalent when I played WoW. On raids I'd try to be top DPS and end up dropping way lower than I was capable of, or I'd make a mistake to get me killed. It's when I'd decide to relax a bit, on things like heroics or just not really trying that hard my skill would increase ten fold.
One example was when I was running a 10 man with some newly leveled 80 clan mates, and my DPS nearly tripled. I was playing nice and relaxed because I know there would be some mistakes made that day, and I was over geared for that instance. Another is when I'd play CoD4 with some of my friends from school and go like 10/30...I go and play by myself and I go 25/5. Under those circumstances I'm not pressured to do my best, because I'm only playing for fun.
It's confusing I know, because you'd think you'd be better when you're trying to concentrate harder than normal, but it's just the opposite. Well at least for me, how about you?
