Doom 3 BFG Edition Bringing Hell to the PS3

Doomguy gets seven new levels of demon slaying and a built-in flashlight.

With the re-release of Quake 4 nearly on shelves, Bethesda has revealed that Doom 3 is the next title it's resurrecting, this time as the BFG Edition. Unlike the Quake 4 re-release though, which is simply the original game being relaunched at a new low price, Doom 3: BFG Edition is a director's cut that will see new levels and a myriad of modern features added to the game.

The update to id's claustrophobic shooter will include the original Doom 3, the Ressurection of Evil expansion and seven new levels titled "The Lost Mission." The two previously released games are being remastered, offering achievements and trophies, updated graphics and checkpoint saving. In a move sure to please players of Doom 3, Doomguy's armor will now have a flashlight attached to it, so no more putting your guns away to see if there's an Imp in that dark corner. The update will also include Doom and Doom 2, presented in their original style.

Planned for release this fall, Doom 3: BFG Edition will mark the first time a Doom game has appeared on the PlayStation 3. The game is also being released for the Xbox 360.

UPDATE: The game will also see a PC release.

So basically they're offering Doom 3: Modded edition, sounds good anyway though. Doom 3 was a fun scary romp.

I'm probably actually gonna pick this up, having the Duct Tape mod installed is a nice console option. Really enjoyed Doom 3, some odd design choices, but a pretty good game overall.

So it's basically going to be Doom 3: Ultimate Edition for the 360...but on PS3?

MEH

They'll STILL probably try and charge 60USD for the damn thing, which is NEVER gonna happen on my end.

While I'm happy that they're adding new features to Doom 3, and I'm definitely going to buy it, I'm even more excited that this heralds the coming of Doom 4.

They're adding new levels?.

That's funny, considering the amount of level content cut from the xbox version.

I've been asking for this since the Doom 3 special edition hit the original Xbox. I have it for PC but sometimes I like having copies of games I enjoy for multiple platforms, reason I have 3 copies of Unreal Tournament 3. New levels just makes it that much sweeter.

Ah, Doom 3. A series of unsurprising jumpout scares with the AI I confused by climbing onto a box. Yeah, I think I'll just go play Doom 2 again instead.

I actually liked the fact you couldn't use a flashlight and a gun at the same time. Though Resurection of Evil's light-pistol wasn't bad. Still, if it's not a horrible price (I'm thinking about $30 would be good) I might pick it up.

Very sweet.

But but but, what about the PC guys? I was so hoping for a collector's edition on DVD or something to play the game again (without the annoying things and with better graphics or something).
I asked Bethesda about a potential PC release and have yet to hear back. I'll let you know.

Awesome! Definitely picking it up for the Xbox 360, PC if it comes out for it. A question about the flashlight: Can you toggle off/on like AVP? I don't want it to be on all the time because that would be boring to be honest.

I'd imagine that the extra content can just be offered as DLC for the Steam versions of Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil, and perhaps they could have a Doom I and II bundle offer available as well. That seems to be easier than just buying a whole new game for those of us (like me) who already have all three games, but still want that new content.

Also, that damn flashlight thing should have been eliminated during QA testing. Surely the testers would have been annoyed at that. I mean yeah, the Duct Tape mod solves the problem, but my point still stands that something as crucial as a flashlight shouldn't have been that flawed in the first place.
