Gotta celebrate a scrappy, obscure lil' indie title - 20 years ago, December 10, 1993, Doom was released. Let's break out the party hats and streamers!

Whoo-hoo! Whee! ?

Yay? ( anyone else? Just me? )

Doom is great. I don't play it as much as I used to but I still return to it every once in a while. I don't think I would be a gamer today without the way it reshaped the gaming industry.

20 years already? Wow... how shooters have changed.

Just a shame that Doom 3 was 2004 and Doom 4 wasn't this year =/

I remember playing Doom in 1993, or at least, the shareware version off a floppy disk. It was a revelatory experience from a gameplay perspective, and a sad one from a "time to buy a new computer" perspective.

This topic makes me feel old.

As a side note, did anyone else read the four Doom novels? A few years back I stumbled upon them in an airport book store while I was waiting for a delayed flight. For video game novels they were actually pretty decent.

I replayed it this year with the Brutal Doom mod. Blasted through all episodes and Doom 2, and stopped playing my other modern games because it was so much fun.

I loved Doom, but never owned the full version. I did however play a shit ton of Wolfenstein growing up, and if anyone knows about a Wolfenstein mod or port to the Doom engine I would love to know.

Happy Birthday, Doom. There are other more sophisticated FPSs (like, almost all of them) but Doom still plays better than any other shooter I know of. It's a run n' gun legend and there'll never be another game that does what it does better.

Way to make me feel old Doom. I was roughly 6 months away from graduating high school when this game came out. Many a night was spent at a friend's house playing via lan. My 486SX 25 being by far the crappiest of the machines there. Ahhhh....memories.

Man, I love me some Doom. After all these years, and the advancements that have come to the FPS genre, Doom still blows most games out of the water. I call it a casual shooter now, but it's far, far better than any other casual shooter that is hot on the market right now or in the last decade.

I never actually played Doom itself, but I did play a couple of its clones (namely Hexen and Blood) which I enjoyed back in the day. Pretty solid stuff for its time.

I remember Doom 2 coming on a whole bunch of those 3 1/2" floppies. It took 30 whole megs of hard drive, which at the time was about 30% of my available space. Funny how fast things change.

I feel so old. I think my dentures need cleaning.

I actually did. They were pretty strange, to say the least.

How is it casual? It demands more skill from the player than most other singleplayer games in the genre^^. Especially if you play Plutonia, that games is gruesome!

I miss games like Doom, i still hope that one day, someone manages to make spmething similar, the fps genre needs to be revived.

I spent $100 upgrading my 486SX25 from 4 Meg of RAM to 8 with used RAM. I wonder if "Leading Edge" is even a thing anymore.

I think the 1x CD ROM and sound card were another $180. I was so happy to get it. Doom and Doom 2 played great on it.

This calls for some music.

And now on some floppy drives!
