I am wondering if anyone else in the world loves and craves old dos games. I have recently been playing the Settler's 2 (one of the first RTS like games). I have also started playing the first LEisure suit larry. Any recomendations (with links to their download)?

I don't think posting links to download stuff is OK by forum rules, so I won't give you any advice until a mod comes along and explicitly says it's OK or you prove (using forum rules) that it's so.

EDIT: But I adore many of the old DOS games, and agree that DOSBox was a great thing to happen.

Home of the Underdogs [http://www.hotud.org/]

That should keep you busy for a while.

Having read legal assessments of it, I can say that downloading Abandonware is technically pirating, but it tends to be regarded in a different light because it's rarely enforced and there is something to be said for preserving ancient games that aren't sold anymore. (Last I checked, copyrights take something like 100 years to expire.)

That said, Home of the Underdogs was mentioned, that's about as good as it gets for sources.

Some of my favorites were Sentinel Worlds and Magic Candle. Track them down.

Daggerfall should work fine on Dosbox, and for those who don't know you can get daggerfall free from bethesda's site.

I couldn't get that to work, but I managed to get Arena to work. Dear god, that was a great time playing character creation until it crashed.

for the love of god UFO:Enemy unknown or UFO:Defence in America. I know its one of the most talked about games in gaminh history but if you dont know it, you owe it to yourself to play it.

I cant get past the magic door cause i cant find any place that lists the price of items which is REQUIRED to leave. I may suggest UESP do it though.

I might shamelessly plug my small gaming blog here with two recommendations. Just scroll past the last entry to find them ;)

Mind you, I don't know if they're abandonware, but I guess the depths of the internets may have you finding "prolonged demos".

Oh my god! http://www.freeoldies.com/ I can't believe no one said that one yet! It's where I found HotU from :)

And I love old games for DOS, like Dangerous Dave 2 (still too lazy to finish that guide...), but old "new" games, too, like FreeSpace 2
Christ, I REALLY need to get a new goddamn joy stick so I can actually PLAY that game... And get a new disk, since mine is unusable. Good Old Games, here I come! ...Sooner or later..

I can activate DOSbox in my sleep.

However, I actually rarely use it. I prefer playing Commander Keen 4, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Duke Nukem and Moraffs Dungeons of the Unforgiven in vanilla DOS mode.

I actually use dosbox on my linux netbook. The only thing I've tried so far is Zork, though (mentioned a little while back by The Escapist itself, actually, where they posted a whole list of free games). Never having used DOS before, it was a bit different to say the least lol. It sure didn't like bash commands >.>
