Will the game be free? It seems unlike since Icefrog said he won't stop updateing DotA. Unless DotA 2 count as updating DotA. Also Icefrog was never in game development for money, it seem unlikly he will want to charge money to player however it is Valve's calls not Icefrog's. Let's just hope not TF2 kind of transaction where it is almost impossble to get the hat you like, without buying it.

Anyways, I really want to play this, since I once play DotA semi-competitive.

anc[is]I have very mixed feelings about this. They said they were basically not changing anything, and now I have to pay for it? On the other hand it is valve... and TF2 is the only game where I can stand to interact with other people on the internet for any given time. Maybe if its cheap with decent single player.
DotA won't have single player. It is just not that kind of game, it was also stated in the link. I admit the communtiy of DotA is... mmm... not very kind. The learning system should help alot through.
Let's hopenot LoL fail system, where I was near the top in Beta but I haven't play for 3 month and after reset Im level 1 and Im match against full level 30 in first game since the hidden rating didn't reset... Really? I haven't played for nearly 3 month, with a blank charater with no rune and talent, against fully armed player with about same skill level?

At the risk of looking like an idiot... what does DOTA stand for?
Defence of the Ancients, it's basicaly a war between two ancient races, Sentinels (trees, nature) and Scourge (death, evil).

If it sounds familiar, it's because they took lore from the game Warcraft 3, where it was just a custom map at first.

So wait valve is taking a currently free mod doing nothing but cosmetic changes and charging for it? Man I pitty who will actually pay money for this crap. I think il pass on this and play the exact same game on wc3 free of charge and without steams bullshit.
It's more to it than that, DotA is limited by the warcraft 3 engine, gameplay wise and visualy.
They made amazing stuff with it but this is the next step.

Okay I see myself being thrown into the stocks and pelted with many iffy looking tomatoes but... "what is DOTA? Is it a PC game? What does DOTA stand for?!" So many questions...

How is it limited gameplay wise? The Warcraft 3 engine allows you to do everything you need to in a game of DoTA. And the Source engine isn't exactly powerful when in comes to visuals, so it's not going to look that great. No idea why anyone would pay for this when you could play the original mod for free or download League of Legends which is also free. But I guess we'll see how it turns out when it's released in 2025.

You have a good point with league of legends. That one also has better mecanics than dota, in the warcraft 3 engine criticals and misses are random, or something like that, so it is harder to make it balanced, when you add a item or something (that's what I heard at least) so that's why the engine is bad, sure it had alot of stuff, but imagine what you can do with an engine that is specificaly designed for it.

About the Source engine.... I have no ideea, I don't think the Engine is what makes the look of a game, maybe it has, I have no ideea, but in warcraft3 the graphics can't improve any more.

Fresh from wikipedia:
Dota is a custom map made in the RTS game Warcraft 3.

Defense of the Ancients pits two teams of players against each other: the Sentinel and the Scourge. Players on the Sentinel team are based at the southwest corner of the map, and those on the Scourge team are based at the northeast corner. Each base is defended by towers and waves of units which guard the main paths leading to their base. In the center of each base is the "Ancient", a building that must be destroyed to win the game.
Each human player controls one Hero, a powerful unit with unique abilities. In DotA, players on each side choose one of 101 heroes, each with different abilities and tactical advantages over other heroes. The scenario is highly team-oriented; it is difficult for one player to carry the team to victory alone.

oh god oh god

I am so excited, I want to feed Gabe Newell my money.

I'm also glad this genre is expanding, the more the better!

AoS maps were very nice in warcraft 3 online mode.

I am freaking out with excitement, take my money already!
You want to feed Gabe Newell your money? Good luck getting it past the six fried chickens, four pizzas and box of poptarts he has in his mouth at all times.

If DotA 2 is just going to emphasize ranked matches, them I'm out.
I already have DotA AI, and occasionally play it with my friends.

I'm pretty damn good at DotA, and even *I* get sick of the constant elitist badgering that goes on in the community. It's that sort of nonsense that drove me to quit; not losing (or the fear of losing).

On the flip side, Ice Frog is one of the most patient developers I've ever seen, and I'm truly glad that his hard work is being rewarded in a very real way for once.
Ever been on HoN? The competitive environment + stat tracking basically means that the lower bracket of play is a cesspool. Sure, you can play non-stat games to practice, but then again if you're doing really well, your enemy can just quit, since it won't record his disconnection. Anyway, back to stats... For some reason one of your teammates get disconnected and booted from the game (meaning the 5 minute grace period expires) at the first 20 minutes, good luck. Not only will you have a hard time winning, but any pleas for a remake will be ignored. Cuz, well, free PSR (Public Skill Rating, or whatever the heck it means. The higher, the better) for your enemies. Get 2 allies disconnect and you can leave "without penalty", but this only involves the number of your disconnects, not your PSR and Kill-Death ratio.

Don't get me wrong. The games sport great and deep mechanics, but the player base is bad and ruins the experience for most of everyone. Then again, if you can get your hands on some high-level replays, prepare to be amazed. Those games are more like carefully-executed dances for the two teams involved than most other games you'll ever see.

Heroes of Newerth? I did not play it, but a couple of my friends tried it.
We did play the original Savage (BATTLE for Newerth) quite a bit though, which is almost like DotA inverted.

The only other DotA-esque game I tried recently was League of Legends; I don't play LoL today; Nuff said.

I think you found one of the strongest causes of these problems: Stats.
Player stats dominate. Your Wins, Losses, Deaths, Ganks, average game time, how many games you've Left ("Leavers")..
In our effort to weed out the best from the worst in the interests of competition, we have created a community who tries their hardest to exploit this system (be it for fun, or for personal advancement); and when they cannot, they start slandering each other on the forums.

And over a million angry Half Life fans to deal with!

Calumon: I think I hear them coming.
I wouldn't call myself a HL fan, but why doesn't valve just finish something before moving onto a completely new game, making a sequel to it, then making a sequel to something that really doesn't need a sequel and then continues to make a sequel to a game with so many different versions already that a sequel seems a bit unnecessary?
Valve is made up of many small development team (all big company are). We just haven't heard from the other teams yet. In other words, they are making more than one game at one time.

Let's see how Valve does out of the FPS environment.
Alien Swarm... Not an FPS...

so this leads me to say... they do pretty good actually.
I thought that they just published that. My computer can't run shit, so I never played it. I did download it, though.

Nope it's Valve :

(taken directly from the Store page for Alien Swarm)
"Alien Swarm is a game and Source SDK release from a group of talented designers at Valve who were hired from the Mod community."

You could debate that the devs are modders that Valve hired and not really Valve... but... they're Valve now so...

Ah. So it's not the core Valve team, them. But a group of new guys. I wonder if they're working on DotA 2. The core Valve team has never left first person perspective to my knowledge. I have faith that the game will be good, and by the time it's out, I should have a gaming ready PC.

Sure it is. I just think that Half life should get priority, since that is kinda like valve's thing.
