DotA: great or crap?

i need to get something off my chest. i've been playing WarCraft III for somewhere near 6 years now, and in all this time i've never played Defense of the Ancients (DotA for short). because of this i've been frequently called a n00b. i've even been banned from a forum because i've never played DotA.

why does not playing a map (cause that's just it: a map! not even a mod or custom campaign, it's just 1 map!) immediately make me a n00b?

what's your opinion on Defense of the Ancients?

but i dont think you should have been banned but just go to an ecafe and play it for 2 hours or something then u can be accepted into the DotA fold

I thought it's a pretty crap game, anyways. If you want to start playing it and not keep getting kicked out of game waiting rooms, you can manually download the map from the internet and put it in your maps folder.

DotA isn't that fun to me. I preferred Tides of Blood and Land of Legends to it.

Don't bother to play either, you won'tmiss out much. The map has the same problem as fable, trying to add variety but eventualy collapses into one huge clusterfuck.

There are arround 90 heroes and all of are supposed to do something but most of the time it isn't stated what. You are just supposed to instictively know that, just like every single abiliy/item in the game.

What's the attack bonus on helm of the dominator?

if you didn't figure it out before you were done reading the three dots, expect to be kicked and banned from every public server you try to join.

I have yet to encounter a dota player who doesn't consider omnisience about his game mandatory before downloading it.

Thing is, OP, I suggest if you try and play DotA for the first time, play with some friends (preferably ones that'll go easy on you, or haven't played before). Don't jump onto battle.net, 'cos the aforementioned Asian will own you. Over and over again.

Dota has overtaken the custom servers, the maps I used to play alot are never played anymore. I occasionally hop into the game now and then and I'm not in the mood to take weeks of abuse online because I don't know what imba item I NEED to buy asap yet. So yes, I dislike dota for the sole purpose of it's popularity.
Warcraft III is a game with some of the most immature players out there. I know it sucks if you start up pimp hero for instance and 5 guys are new and worthless, but cursing and shouting like an 8 year old won't do you crap.

I hate DotA. I hate it just because it ruined NotD. I used to be in a NotD clan called Clan Madd. Everyone quit playing NotD and started playing dota. Thats where all the "veterans" go when they get bored of the game. Damn you DotA. I am the chieftain of Clan NotD and one of the larger problems that I see in my clan is that people play DotA over NotD. If you would rather play DotA then join a DotA clan. Bah. I guess dota isn't the only problem that NotD has, because it is like 4 years old with hardly any changes. Well there are changes I guess but the older players aren't willing to accept them and then they complain about how boring the game is. . .Now I'm off topic though so I think I'll quit.

Look, DOTA is a lot of fun.
And if you're into WarcraftIII enough to have been playing for 6 years then you probably would enjoy it and you are missing out. They shouldn't have kicked you off, but it is pretty astonishing that you've never played.
Perhaps you should request it at your next lan, but read up beforehand or you will get raped. Brutally.

Tried DotA, but I don't like it a lot because after two times of dying I found myself getting shouted at and was told to leave, and some twat later hacked my account and insulted people in a DotA map, so now I'm more to the custom building games like Black & White and a custom map called "Warcraft IV, Rise of the Races!" (Sadly, no one plays those.)
