OK Guys I know this game is horribly out of date but I bought the whole DoW pack and never played Dark Crusade or Soulstorm so I'm catching up now!

I am playing on hard as Space Marines and I can't beat the Necron Stronghold. I need help! At the moment my Honour Guard is 3 Marines, 1 Terminator and two Dreadnoughts. Basically I am getting destroyed as soon as the game starts because as soon as I arrive a bunch of Flayers and Pariahs turn up and the three spidery things nearby resurrect themselves and tear me to pieces.

Any advice from some veteran players?

Make sure you have taken out the Sisters Of Battle first that means you can use a forward base, Also 1st company Space Marine with a heavy bolter is all kinds of ass-kickery, as people have said they arnt a faction to try and beat straight off the bat, myself usually tackled them mid-way through as i worked my way up through the planet in on then to the "Imperial" planet then on down through the necrons ending with chaos (just seemed the right way to do it with Marines).

Don't forget your honour guard can also consist of buildings too. Try starting yourself off higher in the tech tree by giving yourself at the start turrets, powerplants, a barracks and an armoury.

Oh, and Heavy Bolters FTW.

Build turrets pointing out form your base asap. set one dreadnought to block the entrance and back him up with your bolters. He'll take car of the flayers and pariahs. Set the other one back and ready for the vehicles, when they show up he'll deal with them especially of you have a sevitor there to repair him. Build up your base to max before going anywhere.

Just curious, what is the Necron Stronghold like? I play the game, but I play as the Necrons, so I haven't ever seen it.

He's talking about Dark Crusade, the Sisters don't pop up until Soulstorm.

At any rate you need to expand your honour guard, keep your commander out of the thick of things, and deploy as many standard marines as you can muster right out of the gate, survive the opening maelstrom and you are set for the rest of the battle. Just fight through slowly and methodically, use PLASMA UPGRADES ONLY for they are the bane of the Necrons, an Imp Guard force with a plasmic focus can deal with legions upon legions of necrons with no difficulty, and keep your commander at base until you need him, not to mention that you should capture every tunnel entrace you find and destroy every one of those wonky pillars (or "unusual energy source") RIGHT AWAY, especially the monolith graveyard, for god sakes, don't let it awaken. Don't try to be a hero at the last fight, slip Thule in, plant the bomb and go out the way you came, you need to get your commander out only so use the rest of your troops to keep the necrons busy. That's how I did it anyway. With both types of marines and imp guard.

A nightmare. They have tunnels which let them wander right up to your base and appear at random places on the map. Also you have to destroy these damn towers which are a pain. One resurrects all necrons near it periodically, one freezes your units for a long time. Another turns your own vehicles against you and yet another turns the necrons near it invisible. You have to wade through all these only to be confronted by the invincible nightbringer at the end as well as having to protect your commander all the time!
Is difficult.

Like everyone has said, build up turrets as soon and as fast as you can, everything else you can ignore until you have your base defenses nailed down, once you have that done i suggest building your army, every now and then putting down mines, even if they see them, the necrons decide that taking out mines is more important then trying to attack the turrets that are wailing on them at the same time. just don't put the mines out to far, other wise their destruction is a waste.

I also found that having marines with heavy bolters set to hold position does a wonderfull drop of being extra turrets. hell i've fought off the necron's temple thing... can't remember what its called the highest leveled main base you can get.. where it wonders and and blows shit up

You're thinking of an Engaged Monolith.

Wow, that is pretty monsterous. The Chaos army and the Imperial Guard weren't near that bad. Sounds like towers with the Veil of Darkness power, Res Orb Power, and a Chrono-whatever. Plus the tunneling and then the damn Nightbringer? Was their Monolith awakened? If so that is sick.

It's exactly that: necron lord abilities put into towers. Plus the vehicles thing from the skimmer lord. There was also one awakened monolith and a bunch of them that could awake if you didn't blow them up quickly. It was so hard I was considering being the necrons so that I dodn't have to fight them. The nightbringer thing isn't permanent but long enough to reduce a good army to confetti.

Whoops......missed that hehe, well the advice of the Forward base ability stands, i literly allways had Thule in a Rhino ready to go once we had got to the end of the map.

Basically you need the forward base ability. And a full honour guard won't hurt either.

As the game starts, you might want to try to hide a servitor somewhere. Or then just speedbuild marines and throw your troops into the frey, close your eyes and see the result.
