downgrade directX?

Hi guys,
I have a question; it may sound noobish but I really have no idea- is it possible to FORCE a game, for example medieval II total war, to run using directX 7 instead of directX 9? The game preferences don't have this option but I know of a few games that do- so can I somehow force medieval II to use directX 7 and still have it run fine? My laptop can't cope with anything above directX 7.

Thanks, that's encouraging. graphics really aren't an issue at the moment, so long as the gameplay is there I'm cool with that.

type "-dxlevel 70" in the launch options.

Edit: I'll elaborate on that a bit, right click the shortcut for whatever game, where it says "target" type "-dxlevel 70" without quotes.

It might take away important visuals and render the game impossible to play, or might not even load if the game relies heavily on higher level Dx effects.

so right click, go to properties, go to shortcut tab and type in the 'target' box? should I type it after the path? It needs the path to open, and by typing -dxlevel 70 it doesn't open, because the words '-dxlevel 70' aren't part of the path...I hope I made sense

There will likely be some major graphical glitches even if you manage it. So I wouldn't suggest it...
