so, when it came out i got the left 4 dead 2 demo i clicked download, played guitar hero 3 with my friend for 3 or 4 songs, then i checked on the demo and it was 60% complete. so i went to another friends house and noticed that he didn't have it so i suggested he get it. he clicked download, started playing halo 3, and as soon as it loaded, "download stopped." So i said we try guitar hero 3 because it worked for me it seemed to be working fine when he played the first song, it loaded and "download stopped." i tried to consider what could possibly go wrong and the only thing i could think of is he was playing a song that he downloaded a while back and although it was a long shot i thought we should just try a regular song. so he tried a regular song and "download stopped." than i realized that i was playing multiplayer with my friend so being the scientists we tried eliminating all variables, we went to multiplayer loaded a song and than "download stopped." we were baffled and didn't know what to do, 10 minutes later we decided to watch t.v. while it was downloading.

so, what was wrong with it the only other variables i can think of are that he only had one guitarhero controller so i used the xbox controller and the whole different xboxes thing.

Downloads for anything stop the moment you engage in anything else online. Best I can think of is that you didn't notice the "download stopped" on your 360, and it must have downloaded quite quickly whenever you weren't doing something online.

Some games block background downloading, possibly because of online leaderboards that need to use your live connection, but it's completely random. There's probably no actual factor that contributed to it not working at you friend's place, it just... didn't work.

There have been times when I've tried to background download stuff only to be notified it stopped downloading when I started playing a game while waiting - only then it gives me a notification that it's downloaded anyway.

it was a local multiplayer though and it didnt stop my downloading on my 360
Maybe it measures your connection speed and makes a decision based on that (I know it shouldn't matter if you're playing local, but it obviously does.)

Downloading always stops when I start a game while a friend can queue as many downloads as he wants and play a game.

Could be related to the 360's settings but it's no longer important for me now that my 360 is next to my computer.

Yeah, mine stops the download too. I always thought it meant you either download or play a game. Either that, or you need wireless for your xbox so it can pick up more than just the ethernet cable does. Perhaps? I dunno....

whenever your connecting to something else on XBL for gaming, it pauses the download.
local MP in halo allows DL's in background, although I THINK when using HD for cashing/Virtual memory, it pauses as well.
