I have made some my own music but I am not sure I want to release it yet and it is mainly because of downloading! Seriously think about it, alot of people think today's music is rubbish (mostly mainstream) and that they aren't talented.

Well I think they are not trying on purpose, making money of those crappy covers and still getting on MTV! Its there scape goat on putting hardly any effort in and there will always be people that eat it up.

Who knows, maybe there are some real talented people out there but are not going to do much because of downloading or maybe because they can't be stuffed! This goes for Movies and Games also, as you can see from Yahtzees reviews that most of the story lines are pretty lame or have been done before but there are still people trying.

Say you knew you were going to be as good as The Beatles (just an example), would you want go into the music industry knowing that more than 60% of your fans are going to download everything you do? (Not saying I know my music is the best)

Or maybe you think of a really good story that is original, do you think it's worth it? All that effort and you may not get much out of it.

There is a South Park episode on this topic if you can remember, Stan and Kyle started their own band but decided not to do anything until something was done about the illegal downloading. At the end of the episode they changed their mind and decided to make music for the sake of art, because they enjoy it and they want to be remembered in history!

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts? Hollywood, the american music scene and game developers ran out of ideas about 20 years ago, and now they're just going to keep recycling the same old crap, because for some reason we won't stop them. Until people stop paying to see the latest rearrangment of shakespeare to suit the acting range of brittany murphy or ben stiller, things are just going to get worse and worse.

People are going to keep downloading music as long as the record industry keeps overcharging. That said, if you have music, shouldn't your primary concern being about getting it out there and being heard? Word of mouth-and-blog is the best way to get some recognition.

[Edit for an awful spelling mistake]

the real issue here is the people are too afraid to step out of their comfort zone. Hollywood and tv and to a degree music all run on a formula, based on years of market research. Simply, if directors don't think it will sell, they wont do it, which is a shame. the best thing in the world you can do is prove them wrong.

Great Examples:
Evil Dead
Bleach (Nirvana)
Eric Clapton: Unplugged (ok, it was a pretty safe risk, but a risk none the less)

Ill get there eventually, I am still going along with it.

I don't believe there is no possible chance for new original story's and same goes for the best music riffs being all taken, we need people who can think outside the box!

Anyone up for the challenge? I am.

Downloading music is not the same as other pirated material say like Video games, A big reason is if your going to be as big as The Beatles you will sell out concerts and selling 200$ a seat tickets will make you rich. So rich you will get your money for nothing and your chicks for free.

However, Other media like games can not go on tour and all there revenue is made off of selling the product, Why now days you see bands like Nine Inch Nails handing out there songs for free because going on tour is where they become filthy rich.

P.S The type of paranoia though is kind of unrational,It is the same paranoia I see authors having over a book the,"If I tell someone my books idea they will take it" even though no one cares about there books idea rather then just general chit chat.

Oh, there's definately the chance for an original story, Nazulu. It's just that hollywood won't spring money on them, since they aren't guaranteed to put bums on seats like the 400th remake of the romantic comedy formula for the year.

I didn't know that, it doesn't seem right.

I heard the ideas for the matrix movies were stolen from someones book they originally wrote, guess if you think of something original you would want to start it off in a popular media!

How is it not right? I mean it is there songs the only thing they did was hand out all there new songs for free which increases there audience and gets them new fans. So when they go on tour they can then charge 100ish% a seat and charge 20-30$ a shirt. Why in the music industry cd sells is not your only source of income, You get a filthy amount of money selling out 40-50k person arena's each night.

So overall think about it this way if your songs are downloaded means people like them, More people that like them tell there friends who tell there friends. So then just from the internet you can now become a big mainstream band and record studios will want to sign you and then take you on tour to become so rich you can then sing about being poor(Nickleback).

Not to mention if nobody knows who your band is no way will they buy your cd in stores but if they hear your band on the radio alot you'll still get that 40% paying 20$ a cd. Not to mention if you do private concerts at parties and bars as well to increase your word of mouth and sell burned cds for 5-10$ it also increases your fan base which means making you filthy rich.

If you care THAT much about a band, you'll pay for their music.

All you need to do is find your fanbase, make it, and they will buy it.

Well the new AC/DC album Black Ice is coming October 12th and I am definitely going to buy it! I just don't enjoy the music as much when I download it, my Dad had all the albums anyway.
