Well there we have the first real look at Peter Capaldi as Dr Who. A blend of Doctor Doolittle and Sherlock Holmes, he crackled with fierce intelligence and nervous energy. Whether riding a horse in his pyjamas or dismissing Earth as ?planet of the pudding brains?, he was a class act. His unpredictable air added dramatic tension. We don't know this new Dr and we don't know what he will do. It appears this new incarnation has elements of the 1 st Dr and the genuine alienness of Tom Baker's Dr. At last no more pretty boys and flirting, a darker Dr without being emo. A real return to the shows roots.

I really enjoyed the episode, I'm curious to see where it's going.
The new theme song is interesting, might take a while to get use to, but not in a bad way.

As for the new doctor, I have high hopes.

I thought the episode was alright - the story I liked, I liked the idea he didn't really know who he was, that he was confused and that the human/androids were a reflection on him changing and changing until he doesn't know who he is anymore. I also liked Capaldi towards the end of the show... at the start his acting seemed a bit off.

However some of the graphics were terrible. Like the dinosaur. Lord, I know they are on a TV budget but geez! Might as well not try! And Victorian London? AGAIN? *Sigh* And some of the actual shots at the start I thought were really odd - like the camera man didn't know what they were doing. Similar to when Clara was holding her breath... like really? Red edges around the screen? What, is she in a video game now? I found some of the acting wooden also, some of the line delivery was off and it just wasn't funny. And the whole thing with Clara and the doctor not being her boyfriend - I dont remember her ever saying he was? But it kept being brought up. And made a big deal of that he is old.

Not the best opening for a new doctor. Probably a 4/10

Yup, loved it. Consider me on board for this season.

If Capaldi can keep his performance this good he may become my favourite of the revival Doctors, he's already up there.

"And then WE MELT HIM IN ACID!!!"

Ok, I couldnt get a feel for Capaldi as he spent most of the episode either off camera or doing the whole "who am i?" thing rather than being the Doctor... as for the writing, it was terrible. Seriously can we please just get rid of Moffat? He's the Matt Ward (warhammer 40k) of Doctor Who.

If Capaldi keeps this up, he will be a strong contender for my favourite Doctor. Nice, dark story too.

Totally agree about the dinosaur and there's no excuse for it these days especially for the opening of a new series of a flagship show. To be fair, the setting is where/when those characters live so I'll let that slide. As for being her boyfriend,
the last scene in the Tardis he says it wasn't her mistake implying it was his.

Please not the Russell T Davis/ Moffat debate again. He isn't going anywhere because he gets the viewers and whatever you or I think doesn't matter as long as he gets bums on seats.

I really really liked it!

I just watched, enjoyed the show, tried to not think about it too hard, and now I've come away wanting to know answers to so many different questions. I'm actually intrigued by a doctor who episode, something that hasn't happened in a long long time!

Let's not forget the show has had so many different phases with their own tones and styles of storytelling that any "debate" of this caliber is going to be "I like the other guy, so this one is shite".

I entirely agree. Those kind of arguments are entirely subjective and there isn't right or wrong answer. I was trying head off at the pass the standard Dr Who thread Russel T Davis/ Moffat row. It gets a bit tiring seeing the same thing reiterated every time.

To be honest not thinking about Dr Who and just sitting back and enjoying is the only way to watch the Dr. Its never paid any attention to "cannon" and just did whatever they hell they wanted.

Absolutely loved Capaldi as the Doctor. Despite some hardness in understanding his dialogue due to accent in the first scene, I adored his voice. As much as I enjoy the trio of Vastra, Strax and Jenny, I can take them or leave them. Same with the Victorian London setting. But, I do love Clockwork Robots, and thought that the
question of the Doctor either pushing the robot, or letting him fall,
was a fantastic manner in which to give the character a little more depth.

I emjoyed most of the episode which has not happened in a long time. I really like Capaldi as The Doctor but I do have one problem with the episode and that is Clara. I don't know what it is but she bored me to tears in this episode.

I can only hope that this season is actually about the Doctor and not about his companions. And that River Song does not make an appearance but that is a whole other thing.

I really hate the whole doing stupid bullshit after a regeneration thing, but once that was over it was actually pretty good. Way better than Matt Smith's train wreck of a first episode. But next week Daleks again... yey...

Wasn't that Mother Superiorus without the eye makeup? It would make sense since she's a religious type & also a pseudo-human robot. I also got the distinct impression that she was flirting with 11 which suggests why she might call a man she's never spoken to her boyfriend.

Was it Tasha? I wasn't sure, because I kept noticing little mannerisms that made me think of Clara. Time of the Doctor was on right before this one, too.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought the episode was a disappointment. It definitely had its moments (pretty much every scene where Strax opened his mouth). It was a pretty smart move to place the first episode with Madame Vastra and company as it provided a way to ease into the new Doctor.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Between the running around figuring out who he is, the scene where he fake-abandons Clara, and the oh-so-important question of whether he threw a cyborg out a balloon, I don't feel like I got to know the character in any depth. I get that that was probably the point - they leave it up in the air whether the Doctor is willing to kill or not for the entire season to a big reveal at the end - but it just felt forced to me.

Even the call back to a great Tennant-era episode just felt like they were hoping to feed the Tennant fans, not anything natural. The same can be said of the Smith fans with the call at the end. Felt like a ploy to just buy the show time to get into something with substance.

Clara and Team: Vestra are all that held the episode together in my opinion because at least Clara's reaction made some sense and Vestra, Jenny, and Strax make everything better.

Personally, I hope all I'm feeling is new-doctor jitters and not a sign of a new normal, but my gut doesn't tell my anything good.

Honestly, I'm not at all certain it was her.
It would be pretty awesome for either Tasha or Clara to team up with the steampunk robots and become a major series antagonist (maybe proto-cybermen?). We never saw dalek-Tasha destroyed so she's closer to being a robot queen than Clara at the moment - but looking back I'm not sure we ever saw dalek-Oswin destroyed either so I suppose it could be her too.
Then again maybe it's someone completely new & that "boyfriend" noise just means that she's batshit crazy.
