Dr Who to go interactive [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8607925.stm]

In a joint effort between Dr Who creators and a prominent game-designer, Dr Who is set to enter the gaming world. (Again)

According to BBC News [http://www.bbc.co.uk/], the creators of the decidedly British Sci-Fi show are teaming up with game maker Cecil Charles. Charles has been involved in such classic adventure games such as the Broken Sword [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Sword] series and Beneath a Steel Sky [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beneath_a_Steel_Sky].

With such an admirable pairing, there may just be hope for the project, which is planned to be a series of four interactive episodes based on the show and will include voice overs from the Doctor's current incarnation, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan who plays the Doctor's companion Amy Pond. The series has apparently been designed to 'get people into gaming' and 'increase computer literacy'. Here's hoping.

(Heh, aping the style of an official Escapist news-post isn't hard, but, damn if I can't think up anything witty to write, hats off to the staff, it's not so easy...)

Sounds...interesting.

Here's hoping it plays better then the last Doctor Who game.
Which I bet none of you, except maybe the die-hard fans and Brits that read The Beano, know about.

It also came with some Top Trumps cards.

So, Revolution is involved, then? It might not be so bad after all.

"Revolution does a Telltale Games". I do wonder how they would release it though, (WiiWare like Tales of Monkey Island? All four adventures on one disc, like Sam & Max?)

[edit]*reads article* Ah, I'm mistaken. It's a PC and Mac game, made by Sumo Digital (who aren't *too* bad in my opinion) and is priced at Free. I doubt it will be Beneath A Steel Sky-hard (hell, it won't be Sam & Max Season 2 hard), but still.

In addition to the PS2, Doctor Who Top Trumps is available on the DS as well.

If you don't know, the second game mentioned is freely available on GoG.com. And I have to admit, I think it does seem like a good tie-in. That game was a pretty unique, futuristic world with its own very unique characters, a lot of humor, and even some tragic/tense moments.

I have a cousin called Matthew Smith, which I suddenly remembered when looking at an envelope with his name on. I was going to put "To the Doctor" on it, but I have no idea if he'd get it.

I'm a die-hard fan, but I only knew about this when I saw it on the internet somewhere during it's development. It's only a Top Trumps videogame, it's nothing special. It wasn't meant to be a serious game.

As for an interactive episode, they did an interactive TV short (Attack of the Graske) a few years ago with David Tennant and that worked quite well. It was only a 'red button' game though, and was also released on the Doctor Who website afterwards too. But that was alright, so with a full game studio behind them I reckon a Doctor Who game could be quite fun. I'd certainly buy it. Can't relly see it appealing to anyone who isn't already interested in the show, though...
