I did a lot of community theatre as a teenager and therefore grew up with so many gay friends that homosexuality doesn't even begin to faze me. Even when dudes hit on me in real life, I just politely let them know I'm not gay but I'm flattered that they tried. There's no point freaking out about it.

I find it a little ironic that Dragon Age takes place in a medieval time frame (a time where homosexuality is punishable by death) but it seems all the guys love Hawke and it doesn't matter.

Inversely, Mass Effect takes place in the future, but homosexuality is either absent or very well ignored.

As a straight male, I demand that my straight male characters be constantly proposed by gay man whom he must repeatedly and awkwardly shut down. The fact that the lead character isn't constantly covered by horny people of both sexes is probably the reason I have no intention of playing DA2. Yup, definitively that.

I find it funny how people call this guy a homophobe just because of his opinion.Of course Bioware has to stay politically correct in all this and its great that they give this options for everyone to enjoy. However it could have been presented better in the DA2.Its seem its always the homosexuals that get the knee jerk reactions to post like this.Sure I may disagree with your lifestyle but I don't hate you for it.Its your choice and I can respect that as long as you respect my choice to be straight.
Did you read the posts?

Dave Gaider's first post was amazing, and I'm going to expand one of the points therein. Namely, the one about privilege.

As non-heterosexuals (or women, or asexuals, or anyone else who isn't a completely normative straight white male) we have no choice but to be okay with your heterosexuality. Society is predicated on the assumption that everyone is hetero by default, and you are constantly catered to in almost everything, not least within the games industry. If we genuinely weren't okay with your heterosexuality we wouldn't be able to play games, heck, we wouldn't be able to walk outside.

The guy is being heterocentric, if not outright homophobic, in that he clearly considers (unconsciously, to be fair) that to be an entirely normal state of affairs that us fags should just be used to by now. His complaint is not that he has not been catered to, but that he should be the target audience and should be catered to more than anyone else because of it.

It's just standard heterosexual self-entitlement really. A lot of you (by no means all, thankfully, as this thread is demonstrating) are so wrapped up in your privilege that you consider a bias to be fair, and any move towards inclusion to be threatening or unfair on you.

And it's okay, I disagree with your lifestyle too.

It may not be realistic, but what I would appreciate it if Bioware made every character respond to rejection with a cheerful okay. I hate the game making me feel like a jerk because I was interested in a character's story and/or polite and they made an unwanted advance.
That was my main problem. I'm a Christian, but I've found that homosexuality is so widespread in media that avoiding it is more or less impossible. So I don't try, and I don't let it bother me. I work for a gay guy, and it doesn't bother me. It's not my life, and if some homosexual ever hits on me, I'll politely turn them down. Taking this view in DA2 immediately resulted in being punished with Rivalry points from characters that started hitting on me no matter what I did. This is a little silly.

This reminds me of the mass effect complaint on not having enough homosexual content. I like both games and I like the fact that the DA universe has a different attitude towards sex than the universe in mass effect. Besides there are enough games for straight males its time the bis, homosexuals and females get some attention.

Varric is by far the best character in DA2. I am gonna got out on limb here and say that he may be the best character Bioware has ever created.

FYI: Isabella, Varric, and chest hair. Best conversation ever. Though the one they have about the dagger is pretty good too.

Wow. We have literally the opposite opinion on this matter.

Merill is fucking hardcore. She isn't at all like Liara or Leliana (most people compare her to Tali, but I'm not entirely sure why), and most of her dialogue is either charming, funny or heartbreaking. Her companion subplot was also the most interesting.
Yes. Merrill's subplot was the most entertaining part of the game for me. It was the only one with any kind of real emotion in it. She was the only real believable character. The other characters were interesting, but they were quite readable. She had some depth behind her and I could see part of myself in her.

But yeah, I got 2 paragraphs into the forum post in the OP before I vomited. Sum it up in a line?
"There are a substantial amount of women who play video games, but they're usually gamers who play games like The Sims, rather than games like Dragon Age."

I mean homophobia, it's like water off a duck's back. But... when I was at high school, I knew a girl who played The Sims. Therefore all girls play The Sims, right? They're not real gamers like us. They haven't got the stones for it, they'd rather just sit down and do some knitting.

But you do have to admit, being a dragon is also kind of punishable by death. In medieval times as well as in every videogame known to man.

Also, just to nitpick: If you are a hunted apostate, I really don´t think you have to worry about wether homosexuality is acceptable... ;-)

Yet another entitled, ignorant piece of shit whining that everything isn't exactly how he wants it. I'm glad Gaider told him off, if you don't like it don't play the game, it's that simple.

Well Gaider seemed to make quite the sensible response to the homophobe. I can also understand the position of 'bastal' since I come from a hick-town where gays were hated and an open gay attacked just being himself and trying to flirt at the local bar. Bastal isn't comfortable with gay-love between a man and his male character, it just offends and strikes him as wrong. Disgust is a good marker of what we consider immoral and if it is as he says, he was being a good leader and kept getting flirtation from men, it really could become quite the annoyance. "No Anders, you are a valued member of the team, I... I don't think of you like that. Bloody hell man, what is it with you, does the blood smear on my face turn you on?" Yeah, could be funny for us and frustrating to him.

I suppose he could solo it on easy or only go for female party members, maybe that could be a solution in this world of bisexuality.

Or perhaps he misses the good old days of patriarchy and sexism as personified by Korgan. Korgan was quite the filthy little dude, my favourite team member, utter psycho, reliable as a back-up axe. Perhaps this is what balstar is missing, uncomplicated straight characters to fight by his side.

Bioware won't do it, but for the radical homophobe, they could add the option of killing a flirting party member out of shame and disgust (and a little arousal). Let's see how the party deals with that, and the dwarf narrates that one! Don't take me too seriously people, just an idea.

I agree with that sentiment. Sometimes getting any attention or acknowledgement is better then being completely ignored.

I agree with this guy here. Making romance options open to all is stupid. You can't make all characters bisexual. Anders I did not look and see, hey maybe this guy is Bi, I always thought he was straight. Now Fenren was totally bi, he looked bi and felt really girly so I was cool when he hit on me (i turned him down tho). I liked DA:O where some guys were bi and some were straight.

Varric is memorable, hilarious, not to mention opportunistic but in a likeable sort of way. Plus I love that dwarf for being able to make any lie sound damn convincing. Go Varric go!

My problem was that it felt too manufactured, all gay love interests were also the straight equivalent. I didn't like that everyone in the game was Bi, seemed silly since some of the characters just didn't make sense as gay character.

For instance I romanced Merill as a male Hawke and it just doesn't seem like she could possibly be gay but apparently she's also a gay love interest.

Conclusion:

Don't make all your characters romance options, have some which are gay and some which are straight and some Bi and flesh out that aspect of the character. The romance in Dragon Age 2 just seemed like a tacked on extra that was only there because they did it in other games.
