I'm playing Dragon Age: Origins. My characters are level 8-9 and I seem to be having trouble with some of the fights. I've been swapping out characters in an attempt to keep them all leveled up, and am wondering at this point if I should just pick 3 characters and stick with them and leave the the others behind?

Thanks for the help.

I very recently bought the game and as far as I can tell, even characters who you don't use will level up along with your party. For Example, when Sten joined my party he was level 8 and I didnt use him. Later when going through my party he was level 12.

All your characters level up with you, or to be more specific, get brought up to within one level of you whenever you get above them. For instance, You are level 10, a party member you haven't been using is level 6. As soon as you open their stats screen (even in camp), you'll be able to level them up to 9.

As for the "hard" fights, get Crushing Prison, always have a Mage with Heal and Regenerate in the party, focus fire, use grenades and any poisons that you happen to pick up. The game isn't that hard once you get some practice.

It's a bit like this in most recebt Final Fanatasy's. When someone joins your party, they are your average party level. In FF6, there is a portion of the game you spend with just [character]. If you only play as [character], you get more experience, and when people join your team, they can be level 100!

Play the mage tower asap so you can get Wynne. Just like ff, your healer is your single most important party member. Set her to regen your tank as soon as its off of cool and heal any party member whenever they drop below 75% or 50% health (basically she should be spamming heals). Everything else in this game is secondary to keeping your healer spamming at optimum efficiency.

No need for that, I played the game through after killing Wynne. I had one healing spell on my mage, and that was that.
Then I played it again with NO healer and it still worked.
I'm not saying it's a bad tactic to get Wynne, on the contrary, but she isn't the most important.

I recommend either going for a well balanced sensible Tank, Damage Healer setup, or you could go for my critstackingbastard strategy and go for a balls-out A-team of power. (Oghren, Sten, Zevran, etc.)

No doubt you will have some favourite characters to play with, and like the others said, the others will level up anyway. I've always found Shale rather good to have along, and Leliana. That woman really knows her way around a bow.

DA:O has a weird difficulty curve. The bandits in Lothering were tougher than the Darkspawn at the end.

That said, Main + Alastair + Rogue/mage (whichever your main is not) + Wynne will beat most fights with just intelligent tactics on.

Firstly, I'd suggest always having a rogue, they can help you score some extra cash/gear through picking locks or pockets.

Secondly, find fighting styles you like, then understand where their strengths and weakness' are. It took me a good while to get the hang of using Sten and Oghren, but I liked the style so much the next character i made fought two-handed.

Thirdly, always have a way to heal yourself, be it with magic or just a stack of poultices.

Fourthly, learn about the interaction between spells, they're effects can really turn the tide.

And finally, use abilities that complement each other. No point in using an attack that bypasses armour if the targets armour has already been lowered. Save it for later.

I can't ever play without constant regen on my character (I usually play a warrior). When I got the reaver spec, I made morrigan's second spec a healer and that worked well; but, I always have to have some kind of heal on me. idk just me I guess.

Your characters all get experience and level up no matter who you actually take with you in your party. The game becoming difficult for you probably has less to do with your party members and more to do with the fact that the game itself does have quite a few difficult encounters, and especially so once you get into the hordes of enemies that come at later levels.
