Hey guys. I'm playing Dragon Age to get pumped up for DA2. Right now I am playing with a Mage, and I want some advice.

What sort of spells and subclasses should I choose? Should I go Arcan Warrior/Bloodmage? Or Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer?

What sort of spells should I invest in as well?

Any basic tips would be appreciated!

EDIT
Mixed up Arcane Warrior with Spellwarrior. Been playing too much Fable!

Invest in cone of cold. Prehaps one of teh best spells. If you want to be an Arcane warrior, get stone armour, frost wepons, lightning wepons, flame wepons, miasma, heal, upgrade combat magic all the way, death magic (get health from corpses, not blood magic, entropy), and any other debuffs/buffs that are sustainable and just be a walking buff/debuff vehicle, charging into battle with a sword and shield, making it easier for everyone else to kill the bad guys.

Okay. At the moment, I've got Stone Armor, Stonefist, I'm working up to getting Mana Clash, and upgrading my base staff damage.
So the weapon buffs are the way to go?

If you want to play as an Arcane Warrior (The mages who fight with melee weapons). If not, Id say still get one or two of the weapon buffs, but invest in the line of spells up to Crushing prison, get the paralyze line, the hexs and curses can be useful. I Still recommend teh cold line of spells, they are always effective. I try to avoid teh fire line. The walking bomb line I find to be most unhelpful. Lightning spells drain one mana for every one point of damage done. And shock and lightning bolt are both powerful. And If not specing as an arcane warrior, Id spec as a spirit healer.

Spirit Healer + Blood Mage is the best option for a pure spellcaster, though the two together make no sense from a roleplaying perspective. Shapeshifter is lousy for mages. If you want to be a melee mage, Arcane Warrior is the much better option. Shapeshifter doesn't even give you good stat bonuses for a mage (+2 constitution, +1 armor).

If you want to be a true Arcane Warrior, then take some time to really learn the spells. The Dragon Age wiki [http://dragonage.wikia.com] is great for that. You make heavy use of buffs, so you need to be sure you're using your mana pool wisely.

As a mage, I prefer to go with the pure spellcaster route. If you want to be more of a healing or party buffing mage, concentrate more on Willpower (that stat determines your mana pool). If you're more for being an offensive mage, go more heavy on the Magic stat (increases spell potency and effectiveness). When I say focus on one over the other, I don't mean neglect one in favor of the other. Build up both stats enough so that you can have access to what spells you need, and then put 2 points in your favored one and 1 in the other as you level.

Some must have spells:
-Mana clash: It's an area of effect spell that basically kills enemy mages instantly

-Heal: I give this even to my non healers. It's a tier 1 spell and always comes in handy

-The Arcane Tree: The first tier gives you a decent attack spell for early in the game. The second spell gives you a self-shielding power. The third tier increases your staff damage. The fourth tier increases your spellpower. All of these are useful.

-cone of cold: Will freeze enemies. Frozen enemies will shatter to critical hits or to the Stonefist spell.

-Stonefist: See above

-The Telekinesis Tree: Not a must have, but every spell is useful in the tree. Tier 1 is Mind Blast, which stuns all enemies around you. Tier 2 is Force Field, which you can use to protect a party member or to stun an enemy (who won't take damage while stunned) for time while you focus on other targets. Tier 3 is Telekinetic Weapons, which gives a bonus to armor penetration to your party members. Tier 4 is crushing prison, which stuns an enemy who takes damage while stunned in addition to any other damage your party throws at him.

-curse of Mortality: target takes damage over time and cannot heal.

-Death Hex: The whole Hex Tree is useful, but Death Hex makes every normal hit a critical hit. If you combine it with Death cloud (the 4th tier spell in the same tree as curse of Mortality), then there's a pretty strong spell combo. Just be careful of friendly fire.

There are other excellent spells as well, but those are some of my favorites. You'll want to spend points on the spells provided by your specialization as well.

Here's the list of spell combinations [http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Spell_Combinations]. They're pretty fun to pull off, and are all very effective.

Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior combo.

You will break the game with that type of character.

You'll want to pick up Arcane Warrior whatever happens, and then it's out of Blood Mage and Spirit Healer for the second specialisation. If you're playing on nightmare, go Spirit Healer. Otherwise, go Bloodmage. Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior is the best, but it's so OP that you won't actually need it unless you're playing on nightmare. Blood Magic lets you power through mobs more quickly, so it's the more efficient option on lower difficulties.

Then, if you really want to steamroll through the game, make Morrigan and Wynne bloodmages too. Quite literally nothing will be able to stop you :D

^^ The above is full of good advice, but with one critical exception:

Get the Blizzard spell or Chain Lightning.

Blizzard has a WIDE area of effect and will knock over enemies when it first goes off. Also, has a continual chance to freeze enemies who stay in the zone, as well as doing damage. When you get to the later sections of the game where archers/mages show up en mass, this spell helps a lot.

Chain Lightning works in a similar fashion, but instead of continuous damage it just bounces around enemies doing a lot of damage and sucking away mana/stamina from anyone it hits. You might want to avoid this if you're playing hard/nightmare as the friendly fire will kick your ass unless you use it properly.

Also, Spirit Healer. Spirithealerspirithealerspirithealer. Group heal is stupid good.

Hope this helps :)

A bunch of people here are telling you to go with Arcane Warrior and Spirit Healer, but that's not really the best option for a pure spellcaster.

Spirit Healer and Blood Mage can give give you an infinite mana pool. Blood Mages use their own life to power spells. Spirit Healers...heal.

So you use your Blood Mage sustained powers until you're near death, then switch to Spirit Healer and heal yourself, then stay there until your mana runs low and then turn your Blood Mage ability back on.

Fireball.

Fireball is an absolute must.

Knockdown, damage over time, massive AOE, relatively short cast and effect time.
