Hey all.

I just got Dragon Age Origins for Christmas, but before I begin I want to know what class would be best for a beginner. I've never played Balder's Gate or any of Bioware's previous RPGs other than Mass Effect, and the only other RPGs I've really played are Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3, so I don't really have a clue how the combat works. I've heard the game can get pretty tough, so I don't want to get in over my head. Which class is the easiest to grasp or the best for a beginner? Or are they all equally difficult to master?

I started with a Rogue. I'd advise that because once I went Mage I can't bear to go back.

The amount of control, damage and mastery of the field that being a mage grants you is insane compared to a rogue.

Plus I liked being a rogue so I could unlock doors/chests without having to take Leliana or Zevran everywhere.

I've never played Balder's Gate
£12 from Play.com for BG1+Expansion and BG2+Expansion.

Enjoy! ^_^

I began with a human warrior, because I think that's the perfect starting class and race. I think that mage and rogue are more complicated, and I think that they are for more experienced players.

I too recommend Human Warrior. The Warrior class is the least complicated, but still fun-class. Mages are fun the first 2-3 hours, but you get bored pretty soon since all you do is cast a spell, run away, pop a potion, run away some more, RUN FASTER, cast another spell, and hope that your companions will save your ass while you're busy running away. At least a "primal" mage plays that way...

Dual wield rogues are fun too. But stick with Warrior first^^

I would say Rogue cuz it's easier to get items and money that way, you can open locked doors and crates which net you items, at the very least you can sell the stuff you dont need and you also get exp for unlocking stuff. Small exp but it all adds up.

It doesn't matter if you haven't played any of biowares other stuff, since i hadn't either before i got DA:O and i went mage.

It's up to your personaly preference.

Play a dwarf because Dwarf > Other races.
Go warrior if you are unfamiliar with the game.

You must have really sucked at playing a mage. No offence, but "running away" isn't something I did much as a Mage...

Even a primal mage would likely go "Storm of the Century" then laugh as everything dies. Cone of Cold on anything that gets near, and a Fireball if you have it. And that's before we get to Paralyze/Mass Paralyze/Sleep/Horror/Waking Nightmare spread, or the Force Field/Crushing Prison cheese.

And for total domination take Arcane Warrior and do all of the above while wearing the best massive armor in the game, or Blood Mage for an AoE version of Crushing Prison. Seriously, Mage is the easiest class to play with.

However, the simplest is the Warrior. Rogues require specific builds not to suck and Mages require the knowledge of which spells kick the most arse.

Yeah well, i only had fire, lightning and some of the earth stuff. No ice, since Morrigan could do that. My Mage was Healer/Arcane Warrior Mage, so he could heal, but not deal much damage. I ran around with a kick-ass Arcane Warrior sword, but i never wore good Armor. While the sword did deal good damage,i always had to sheath it away to cast a spell. Come to think of it, it was probably the worst mage combination possible lol.

Still, casting stuff is not as much fun as decapitating ppl in close combat, or get a chance to do an awesome finishing move on Ogres/Dragons.

Warrior is simple and straitforward, but I found it fairly boring, so I'd go with rogue first. Mage is the most fun, but also the hardest to play as.

I also vote human warrior. You're well armored and ready to face almost anything.

I vote Mage, just so you can be a badass in control of everything.

I played a human warrior my first time through, only had a total party wipe once, when I wasn't paying attention, heh.

The first time I played through I was a Dalish elf warrior. It was ok, but I prefer my rogue.

A rouge that acts like a warrior
It's got a weird ass difficulty curve but it's worth it

I played 3 times through the game. Currently at my fourth playthrough. Mages can do everything in theory, yes. But you forget that you're limited to a few skill points every now and then.

Start with a Rogue, Warriors have too much responsibility in battle. Mages are easily the most fun though.
