I got Dragon Age for Christmas, and I set up my character as an Elf Rogue, who was a Dalish Elf. I then went on to become an archer.
But I have a problem, my character does fine in battle until the enemy gets too close, then I usually loose. Does anybody have any tactics for archers to prevent this?
Also, include what your character is, and your opinion of Dragon Age. Thanks. :)

Pinning Shot. Also just take them on with your "tank" run around so you have a good look at them and shoot like insane. Just pack Alistair or so in ginormous suit of armour and let him taunt or something.

I didn't like the archers in that game. Good for the foes, but for your group... the magic-user always seem better in long range combat. Ah well.

I don't play the game but, I would think run away shoot run away shoot is the normal tactic for those situations.

Next time you can get a talent, get the 'Melee Archer' talent. It will allow you to continue shooting your weapon, even while being attacked. Also, if you're a rogue, get some supporting techniques, like Dirty Fighting, and Below the Belt.

Pinning Shot and Crippling Shot for archery are good, too.

I had a similar problem with my Dalish Elf Warrior Archer.

I chose to be a mage. I usually find that the enemies attack everyone who isn't me, and I can shoot spells at them and then standing there waiting for my mana to fill up because I forgot to buy fucking mana potions. I think I'll start again and be a warrior.

Dwarven Commoner, warrior.
I recommend investing in the dual weapons tree a bit, just to beat those guys who get close

Cool thanks, just realized Dirty Fighting helps a lot. What does Below the Belt do?

Doesn't work too well in this game. It takes a second to shoot, then it's too late.

Below the belt is a Tech where you kick your opponent in the crotch. It deals normal damage, and I forget what it's other effect is...

Human noble, rougue prestige clas duelist.

There is a talent called "Melee archer".

"Experience fighting in tight quarters has taught the archer to fire without interruption, even when being attacked" - The Dragon Age Wiki

EDIT: Ah, took a little bit too long to confirm from wiki. Others hurried before me.

I am so there :p Thanks.

Why is it I always choose archery in a game cause it sounds appealing and then it turns out to be rubbish? It happened with Oblivion and other RPG's too. I want to be like Legolas god dammit!

My Dalish Elf Warrior Archer is actually pretty effective. Of course, I usually have Alistair in my party. Morrigan, too.

One problem I've had recently is involving the Dog. He hadn't been attacking enemies, nor using his techniques, so I had to fiddle with his tactics in order to make him work.

Do you're other characters die quickly too? I mean, you have 2 guys with swords fighting a horde of bad guys, and 2 others staying in back firing off spells and arrows. Your 2 other guys are absorbing all the blows

Here my suggestion. In battle, switch to Morrigan and have her shapeshift into a bear, spider, ect. Or switch to her and have her cast a freezing spell on the first horde of enemies.

That way your 2 warriors don't absorb as many blows.

Also, have you been spending points on Constitution, I think that's the one that makes you able to take more hits,

Only use I'd think for Morrigan is stunning enemies by cone of cold or mind blast.

Normaly I play the mage (in Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights 2 i.e) but now I'm getting used to my current party with Alistair, Sten, Leliana and me. So that makes 2 warrios to draw the fire, one to confront mages and archers and me to backstab and turn the tide of battle. I was having serious troubles with Master Ignacatio (or something like that) until I rigged 8 traps right in front of him :D
