My largest problem was aside from being a mage, there was absolutely no reason to pour your talents into anything but your chosen tree. as a warrior you couldn't use any abilities from the two-hander tree with any other weapon and vice-versa. As a rogue you're either ranged or not, splitting your points up wouldn't get you far. The only wiggling for non mages is your specializations, which are all pretty bland and sometimes I don't even put my points into them because the core skills are most often better.

...Maybe I'm just greedy from starting off with AD&D 2.5 player's options. I remember spending hours creating a new character that was always completely unique.
I share your feelings on this one. I found the system very narrow.

You can be warrior, mage, rogue and then you can choose from 4 specializations for each. For example, if you're a mage you can choose to be a shapeshifter, and turn into giant spiders and bears. If you're a rogue you can choose to be a ranger and summon wolves and bears to help you.

Is it like the old d20 games? Like Baldur's gate where you choose your class and can multiclass? Where you choose your alignment and whatnot?

Just wondering (and please don't tell me to google it)
I'm just gonna put in my two cents here and let you know that the game is worth getting even if you're not too interested in its class systems.

I wasn't too impressed at first, it took a while to get going but once you're 10-15 hours in this game will own your life.

The combat is varied (once you level up) and very challenging at times.

But its the stories in the game that are its real strongest point. It's a fantastic world, with sympathetic and interesting characters... lose yourself in it!

It's also the most laugh out loud funny game I've ever played, there is some amazing writing there.

Get it!

It's very similar, but I can't say I like it. You can't quite see the dice rolling as you could in NWN etc but I really dislike the combat, I hate to quote him but I did find it a bit of a "clusterfuck" and gave up on it pretty quickly. I liked NWN but didn't get on very well with the Baldurs gate games or NWN 2. So I would say that on balance, if you liked Baldurs gate and NWN 1 & 2 you should like DA:O, if, like me, you didn't like them then you probably won't like it.
