I've given it as much of a shot as can reasonably be expected. I wanted so badly to get pulled into this world, and live through an epic tale of great peril and heroism. I love what Dragon Age represents: character creation; rich, full backstory; reams and reams of dialogue and conversation options, exploration, and tactical action.

But, I just can't do it.

This is the second time I've tried to play Dragon Age: Origins, and the same thing has happened as it did the first time: Soon after the first major plot point, and right in the middle of one of the first real quests on my mission, something snapped in me.

Perhaps it was the fact that combat was kind of a slog, and I'm not used to the "RPG-ness" of its mechanics. Though I thought I'd been doing rather well, considering!

Perhaps I was crushed under the realization that I'd been playing the game for upwards of 13 hours, and I was still in the middle of one of my FIRST QUESTS (after Ostagar), and every three minutes the game was piling more and more side-quests onto my poor, put-upon Grey Warden, with no relief in sight.

Whatever the case, two attempts in, and my overwhelming urge, instead of being compelled to press on, was simply to say, "fuck it. where's Oblivion?"

Am I a bad gamer? Am I the only one this has happened to? Should I even bother with Dragon Age 2?

Sometimes I wonder "What is it with people and their need to make threads about them not liking a popular game?"

Then I realize that it is a pointless question.

So anyway, to the problem at hand:

You don't like the game. Don't play it anymore. Psychoanalysis over. That'll be 100 bucks.

Jesus Christ, some people need to get over the fact that other people have opinions.....

Anyway, sorry you didn't like it. I felt the same way about Mass Effect. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't.

Oh well, to each his own.

Although in this case, I suspect it is more about people needing to get over the fact that they themselves have opinions.

Such is usually the case when someone asks if they are a bad gamer for not liking something.

I actually had the exact same experience. My advice?
Try playing a mage.
The combat as a warrior PC is shit and the rogue isn't much better.
But as a mage, you get freezy death, thunderstorm death, fiery death, beetle death, stone death, paralyze and pretty much anything else you could hope for and the combat gets much, much, much better.
This, coming from someone who put about a calendar year into oblivion.
It really is worth it for the characters. DA's characters are the most well developed and interesting I've seen, besides perhaps ME2

While you may suspect the opposite of my opinion, I suspect the opposite of your opposite... Of my opposite.

Anyway, he's allowed to make a thread if he wants to "get the feel" of The Escapist's general consensus. But yeah, I get your point.

So you don't like the game, it isn't for you.
Nothing wrong with that, we all have this problem.

I wanted to love Bioshock, but the gameplay was so boring I had to force myself to the end. The story was amazing. Well apart from the laughably black and white endings.

It was just boring to play.

Anyway, rant aside, you can't expect to like every game. Even if you like RPG's, there will be RPG's you don't like. This happens, its normal.

There. Your problem's solved.

Maybe you're not the RPG type person. But I don't see the problem here. I don't like RPGs either, and I enjoyed DA:O immensely.
By the way, you do realise they're called side-quests for a reason right?

They weren't black and white!

They were black, white and... blacker...

Well actually, it was black twice, only with one of the black endings Tannenbaum was shouting more.
