Dragon Age Tactics Slots Help

I know that you don't need to play with the tactics to be good at Dragon Age, but I want to know just how the tactic slots work. I've got down the assignments, like "activate ability X", but I want to know how the other tactic slots work.

Can anyone offer a beginners guide to tactics for me?

...They pretty much do what they say honestly. It's all pretty straight forward...and to be honest you won't use most of them.

Any specific questions though?

Handy ones to know are "Self: Any", as that will have allies always have certain buffs active.

Also, giving your party automatic usage of health poultices is a good way to run out quickly. Especially with mages and lyrium pots.

Also: ____, being attacked by melee attack: Activate "Taunt"

is great for tanks, as it will draw enemies away from more frail members.
