The change I'm interested in is that it's to be set at least partially in Orkney.

OT: I agree with Gaider. I've never touched Dragon Age, nor do I plan to, but BioWare have already given us a number of games where you can customize your character, and I think it's fair for them to have a more linear character. There was a reason it was called 'Origins' anyway.

As a fan of Dragon Age, I'm all for it. The changes between KOTOR and KOTOR2 were all fine and good and improved the game's playability.

However, I'm still waiting for the end credits of the original Dragon Age to actually finish so I can play through Leilana's new solo quest....

The only thing I dislike about this is that you have to be human (by the looks of it). I'm gonna miss my biig dwarven beard... Other than that, it all sounds pretty interesting, however I am hoping that they do not greatly change the combat system, as I found it worked pretty well as it was.

So far, it actually seems better to me (except of coruse, the screenshots show shitty graphics, but that's obviously because the game is Pre-Alpha stage).
My only complaint is that I can't play a dwarf. I mean, goddamnit, dwarves are awesome! And the dwarven commoner intro reminded me of that movie that was set in the middle ages and was about that kid and shit and it had Heath Ledger. Wow, what a stupid sentence.

The whole "make your own character" thing is an incredibly weak mechanic. Yes, you get to choose what you look like, but you're also removing most of the ability of the developers to give your avatar personality. They just have to give you some lame "choices" that don't really personalize your mute character at all.

Frankly, I'm glad that they're putting only one character in. This will allow for a much better experience due to *actually having a character with personality*. After all, this is a series that prides itself on epic storytelling, and you can't tell a good story with weak characters.

...has this EVER been the case? I can't think of a single time when this kind of no-details "don't worry, it's not what you think!" reassurance has ever panned out. It's nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction any time a company gets a negative response to somethink they're doing.

Making judgments off of cursory information > "Trust us, you won't mind us taking away the things that made the first game great!"

I believe this is a really good choice.

Many have said it, when you catter to fans the game ends up feeling like [insert game name here] 1.5 instead of 2.

In this case, they are NOT trying to live up to the prequel. They are improving upon it, and making it even better.

I say it's a really smart move.

If you have a sword, slay monsters, collect magical objects and explore a deep (if some what tiny) game world, then I'm happy. The Grey Warden in Dragon Age Origins lacked any form of characterization and was, essentially, the most boring protagonist EVER. The combat system was shite to boot, this being a shame as the writting and world creation were excellent... it was just a terrible, terrible game to play with very little enjoyment value (and I'm an RPG fan!).

Like I said: swords, magic, monsters and AN ACCTUAL COMBAT SYSTEM is all that is truly required. Couple this with a proper protagonist and a sense of character development and achievment and you have the makings of a great video game. If this turns out to be Dragon Age Origins 2, I shall not be happy as it would be a terrible waste of Mr Gaider's writting prowess.

At what time period does the game take place relevant to the original? Because if it's many years later....

I'm just gonna call it... You are Morrigans/demon/Gray Warden love child.
As far as i understand you start around 10 years after DA:O, you were alive during the Blight, you were stationed in Lothering but instead fighting you decided to escape to Free Marches. So no, you are not going to be tied to DA:O character in any way. Im more leaning towards the plot brining you at some point to meet with either Mori (which i would love due to Claudia Black VO) or her child.

As for the whole deal. Give them time. You so far know nothing about the gain except few very vague details. They said the combat still will be tactical on PCs and only consoles get a more pad-friendly system.
I also doubt they will go alignment way, circle is just much more convenient in choosing responses over numbered list.

I liked the contrast between ME and Origins and I'm a little disappointed that they're going to alter Origins into more of a "casual" RPG experience.

While I trust Bioware and will probably end up getting it anyway... I'm still skeptical. I can just tell they're going to cast Gruffy McDeepvoice for the male PC and I'm not going to be able to play as one because no character I make will fit such a voice and it will annoy me to hell.

That, and this seems a lot more like a spin-off than a sequel.

I trust Bioware, they've never let me down before. I don't know how it will turn out in the end but I'm looking forward to it.

I honestly don't have a problem with this. I like how Mass Effect goes about character creation and interaction a lot better than Dragon Age. It's about time they give DA an actual voice, you know?

I totally agree, everyone is jumping to conclusions and worrying too much. Wait for the trailer next month, gameplay video's and information and more and then decide. I'l be getting the game anyway.

As someone who only has a PS3, a Mass Effect like experience is something i've been crying out for. As well as the fact that a silent pratagonist who only utters phrazes such as "I can't open that" is incredibly dull and lifeless, it will be good to play as someone who is compelling rather than play around those who are.

Also the origins thing was lackluster. I'd rather play a crafted single story rather than choose between 6 weak ones.

I'm just bugged by the apparent lack of continuity.

I'm not against this concept at all (It works well in Mass Effect, it could work well in other genres). I'm just annoyed that they started a series in one way, then seem to have abandoned not just a gameplay mechanic, but an essential STORY mechanic as well.

What happened to my newbie grey warden? What of my friends? The character interactions made Origins interesting as opposed to the retreaded and trite plot/world.

Frankly I was hoping this series would be like an updated and improved Baldur's Gate trilogy, but it's obvious that they're taking it in another direction. The cynical side of me believes that this is a commercial decision that will allow them to bring the sequel to market faster, which frankly is something that I was dreading when Bioware was made part of EA.

I'm not happy about it, I'll withhold judgment until I see the finished product, but I will state that the primary reason why I didn't buy Awakenings was because it didn't fully carry the plot forward from the first game, so it's unlikely I will purchase DA:2 if it's more of the same.

I don't see what the big deal is, really. Dragon Age wasn't that great, really, it was basically Neverwinter Nights 2.5, so if they want to change it up, who cares? I'd say it's about time.

In fact, I'd go one step further and say this whole "Origins" thing and player choice nonsense and blah blah blah is one of the biggest problems with Dragon Age and contemporary RPGs in general. Sometimes I don't want choice. Sometimes I want to experience the story you, the creator, have to tell. Just because a game doesn't let you build precisely the kind of stunted, idiotic character you want doesn't mean it's a failure. Quite often, in fact, it makes the game better.
