Hello escapist, just wondering what everyone thinks of dragon ball Z?

I have to saw, I'm a fan. I love watching the abridged series and if anyone makes a reference or an "IT'S OVER 9000!" joke, I'll usually get all exited. But watching the real cartoon is kinda' slow...

I'm still half convinced Goku was actually retarded. I mean in the legitimate sense of the word, he did have massive untreated brain trauma as a small child resulting in severe lifelong amnesia of his early childhood...

I loved the original when I watched it as a kid. But I think if I watched it now I would be even more annoyed by all the padding. Thankfully, I have DBZ Kai to watch which combines all the best things about the show.

Not as good as the original Dragon Ball, when ther was actual story! But still enjoyable non-the-less.

I like it desire being either unborn or really young when it was aired (I forget, I was born in '96 but can't remember when it was aired in the UK)
I've bought most of the related games too, those are fun.
Especially beating up higher-powered characters (Frieza, Cell, Goku etc. Take your pick) with lower powered characters (Krillin, Tien, Yamacha pretty much any full human and Raditz).

I liked the original but Kai does come close, the only thing it lacks is like half the good combat scenes and the BLOOD!

Only half? Everyone I talk to is sure that he is!

Okay, you've heard all the jokes, but I'm gonna do a rundown. DBZ is alot of drawn-out action and not-action, with pointless filler and, on top of it, some lousy dubbing. Not to say that the voices are bad, just that the dialogue has been...on many occasions...crap. But that's censoring for you.

I watched DBZ on Toonami because I was really bored. And even then, I was irritated by all the points where...

{1} Everyone stands agape and WATCHING a fight or transformation or power-up and nobody DOES anything.
{2} The long-fucking-sequences that cause Point #1 take most of the episode or MORE THAN ONE. (Fuck off, Freiza.)
{3} I have to hear about power levels and the lame showmanship.
{4} The Ginyu Force does ANYTHING but fight or get creamed.
{5} We have to sit through training montages where NOTHING HAPPENS.

There are other infractions I know I'm forgetting. I don't hate DBZ, but I find that the only thing longer and more aggravating at times than it is FUCKING INUYASHA!!!

Same. I tried to rewatch the original versions, and the pacing kills me now that I'm not a kid. But me and my brother have been watching Kai, and that's been a lot of fun. Although the old voice of Frieza just can't be beat =P The new one is ok though.
I really love that nearly all of the voice actors have been maintained in their roles in Kai. It's nice to see the same people giving tribute to the original show and improving on their work, they all fit their characters amazingly that it's one of the few dubs where I really love the voice acting. I especially love Frieza's voice, though I don't remember how his old voice sounded sadly.

Apparently 10 minutes is an incredibly long time in that universe, at least, according to the final part of the Goku-Frieza battle. Reminds me of Naruto and what is supposed to be 5 seconds.

As childish as it was when I was a kid, I still and always rooted for the bad guys. That being said, if I were to go back and watch the entire thing then I would rate it as a 6 or 7 out of 10. The characters are cheesy and the combat is also cheesy, also the characters such as Hercules Satan (Japanese pun on America) which is a complete joke on American wrestling were always unnecessary in my eyes.

There was also the complete idiocy of the the wives in the later seasons that really felt unimportant and totally ripped the immersing experience in half. All of that being said, I still somehow like it. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese cartoons or Manga, but for some reason this still sticks with me as one of those things I enjoyed more than hated.

All of that aside I love what these guys at Team Four Star have been doing with a parody. If you think that Goku was retarded and that the mother was completely overbearing than you should totally watch this. They plan on keep making it until the Buu Saga.

When it comes to DBZ now I can only watch Kai. No fillers and the dialogue is amazing(especially if you watch the uncut version). Funimation has really improved in leaps and bounds since they originally dubbed Dragon Ball Z. It is one of the fondest memories of my childhood, and when I saw DBZ Abridged for the first time I was in stitches. Ghost Nappa!

Nothing can beat the original Dragon Ball though, that show was just too awesome for words.

It's a good show. I think it should've ended after Cell. Because then Gohan became a huge fucking pussy. And he's supposed to be the most powerful character in the show.

1, but it takes 3 episodes

Anyway, I really enjoyed the series as a kid and enjoy DBZ Kai more now that the filler is gone. Then again Kai just seems rushed considering nostalgia says the episodes should be longer.

All that padding is there to give the Manga a chance to keep up with the Anime.

I'd like to debate this. Goku was raised in a small hut by an old man who died when Goku was young.

Goku never went to school his entire life, so his stupidity well it's a bit overdone for comedic relief, is only natural.

I loved the entire series, didn't like Gohan after the Cell Saga. He just seemed "meh" to me.

I watched it when I was younger. It took until the Buu saga before I said enough is enough though. The Cell Saga was one that I really liked (especially the finale where Future Trunks returns to his own time). I probably could have gotten out of it sooner though. Many of the fights took way, WAY too long. At the same time though, I was supplementing DBZ other other anime like Fist of the North Star [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devilman].
