Dragon Quest IX Sells 2.3 Million in Two Days

For those of you who don't know the Dragon Quest series (Dragon Warrior in America) is INSANELY popular in Japan. Such that in it's NES days a law was past that DQ games couldn't be released on a school day.

DQ VIII is on my short list of favorite games. I wish this had been a console game and not hand-held. Oh well, I'll wait for ten.

Actually when you consider Japan alone DQ has always been the best selling series there. FF only sells more thanks to international sales.

I disagree final Fantasy has always been the most popular Rpg there but DQ has always been close to their sales figures. It will be intresting also see how well Final Fantasy 13 will sell and see if it still more popular or not

The Dragon Quest series was recognized by Guinness World Records with six world records in the Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008. These records include, "Best Selling Role Playing Game on the Super Famicom", "Fastest Selling Game in Japan", and "First Video Game Series to Inspire a Ballet".

Everything I can find points toward DQ being more popular there.

You guys might have heard this before but when a new Dragon Quest game comes out the schools and some work places wont have anything that day because they know that no one will be there. And they are out buying the new game

You seem to have the wrong idea, rockerfly. There's no room for opinion here, just sales number. The only known period during which DQ games weren't outselling FF games in japan was around FF7 and FF8, when there were simply no DQ games published.

VGchartz may be less efficient for other regions, but for japan they use the very reliable numbers produced by mediacreate.

Best selling PS1 Dragon Quest, DQ7, is above the best selling PS1 final fantasy, FF7. Best selling PS2 Dragon Quest, DQ8, is above the best selling PS2 final fantasy, FFX. The pattern is the same for NES and SNES.

Heck, the old NES DQ3 is not far behind FF7, which on the other hand was an unprecedented surge in sales for the FF series.

Of course they're all beaten by Pokemon.

Oh that is very interesting, I thought really that Dragon Quest would be more appealing to the western audience than Final Fantasy but hey the sales figures don't lie

What I found to be particularly interesting is DQ7 has 4.12m sales in Japan and only 0.21 in the rest of the world. If that's not a testament to Japan vs the rest of the world opinion on DQ then what is.

On a side note I'm not trying to say DQ games are bad, I have all of them even the SNES ones on emulator, just that it's WAY more popular in Japan.

Yes, the games are usually solid but very traditionalist, some like DQ7 seem to play heavily on nostalgia and/or familiarity instead of cutting edge technological innovation. The western world prefers the latter, japan the former.
