Behind all this stuff? A fire sword that will carry you through the next 20+ hours with ease. And you can get it in the first few hours.
There`s a treasure system and the chance the sword is actually in there isn`t high. You could save before you open the chests and if the sword isn`t in there quit and load again but this can get very tiresome. I`m not sure how it is with the watergod altar but in the Everfall the chance to get something usefull is 2 or 5% (Everfall + collecting armor sets + Godsbane = countless suicides).
Huh. Didn't know that - I guess I got lucky. :D

Reload until you find it?

Luckly I didn't have to restart as there is an one use item in the game that allows you to re-model my PC and pawn.
I may have to use that. Got distracted from the game early on when I first got it and I've just gone back and realized my PC looks like a disturbing cross between Lord of the Rings' Aragorn and porn star Ron Jeremy.

Where is this item?

You get it from a salesman selling potions to modify your pawn, found beside The Encampment Runestone. IIRC he wasn't there the first couple of times I visited but he does show up very soon into the game. He doesn't charge money but Rift Crystals.

You safe before opening a treasure, if the item you want isn`t in there quit without saving and reload your safe. In the endgame you get the Godsbane and it makes the whole procedure a bit faster since you don`t have to go to the main menu again. I wouldn`t recommend this if this is the first playthrough (since you get enough usefull stuff over the time) only if you feel the crazy need for certain weapons or armor pieces. All in all it`s a tiresome grind but with it i got all the missing armor sets (grizzly, twilight) together.

There are treasure maps of the everfall on http://dragonsdogma.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon%27s_Dogma_Wiki . I know it`s cheating but after the fifth playthrough and countless disapointing opened treasures i didn`t care.

I just decided to get dragon's dogma, and I am struggling badly.

I picked a fighter class, but may have to start anew tomorrow to play as strider. I hate how much enemies will simply run the fuck away and being able to do little but wait for my pawns to help, as much as I despise the idea of trawling through that dragging intro again.

For one, I have no idea what to do. I'm going around doing side quests at the moment...or at least trying to. I get killed so damn quickly, blocking with my rusty shield does little but set me up for a follow up attack. I'm stuck with my peasant's clothes while I try and find a merchant, but there's none to be found. I walked up to the next town to find it closed for no good reason.

I've enjoyed the good parts so far, but I'm beginning to doubt whether the game has any intention of letting me progress in some way.
All right no problem. just a few noob mistakes that are to be expected from someone new to the game.

First: Find where you are int he main quest, I have no idea how you got lost this early on but once defeat the bosses at the forward camp (just north of the starting town) the game then proceeds to start an escort quest to the capital city, once this is completed it will be opened to you.

Early merchants (pre-capital city) can be found near the end of the starter town (heading towards the exit take a left down the road, there will be a few shops you can check up on, one of which has a female npc attending the store) and wandering merchants will sometimes go to the one forward camp.

As for being a fighter. Don't worry about it, fighter is one of the best classes in the game (right under mystic knight in my opinion) it will have some of the best offensive and defensive skillsets for anyone who wants to be in the thick of a fight. Use sprint and jump attacks to catch enemies that run if you need to, later on enemies will not scatter at all.

Also you do not need to reroll for a strider, once you reach the capital city (still very early in the game you can change your class at any time at all with no penalties at the tavern. Each class levels up separately allowing you to experience and experiment with all the options before finally making your choice.

Never take pawns with the "Guardian" inclination.

Always have one mage in the party. (As in, not a sorcerer)

Don't worry too much about healing items. You find enough stuff to over encumber you quite frequently. (I have one character who never goes into town and I still get over encumbered with junk)

If you are a mage/sorcerer, make a copy of the ring you get after killing Salomet, put the real one in your storage, then give the fake one to the king.

Look up the Golden Idol quest. It's a bunch of obscure crap you have to do and most people will miss it on their own, which prevents you from getting the weapon/magic merchants best stuff later.

When you get to the Everfall, always carry at least 3-4 items that can heal petrification. Panacea or the ones specially for petrification.

If you are a sorcerer, Comestation will be your bread and butter paired with a little bit of the fireball spell. When a Griffon or Chimera is on the ground, nail them with it for massive damage. (I've killed Chimeras outright with it.) Once you get Bolide and High Bolide, if you use them right, you're unstoppable.

Although I'm pretty sure you've got all you need at this point:

Avoid travelling by night, and always have a lantern if you do.

Have with you a healing mage pawn, and buffs are nice too. It's a nuisance healing on your own even if you are a mage. If you can be bothered, look up the inclinations and what they mean behaviour-wise (ie: Don't get a Guardian).

Don't go too far. A lot of what I did early on was, admittedly, taking on monsters too strong by half for me and spending an hour killing them, but it isn't necessary. Stick to what you know. Even the bandits at the top of the hill near the starting village are hard enough when starting out. Areas are easy or hard without indication, all it takes is to stray from the path and you've got a Chimera instead of goblins.

Look up quest progression. Just the names, for no spoilers. I say this because sidequests frequently become blocked as you progress through the main questline, so make sure you've completed what you have to. The main quest is generally a good way to keep things around your level, but you don't want to miss out either.

As far as classes are concerned, they all work. I went for the longbow first, and it served me well. The only real carry-over you have to worry about is attack and magic attack. None of the other stats matter between classes. My advice is to try and stay either physical or magic, but for the main game anything will do. When you get to the real final boss, the online version, you may want to make a new character and level only attack or magic attack as an assassin or sorceror, but for regular use, chop and change as you see fit. For what it's worth I found Strider really good, especially the volley attacks and especially when buffed with flame (fairly common buff among pawns).

Look up the Golden Idol quest. You'll miss the Golden Idol if you don't, honestly, and it locks you out of some nice gear. Also, make copies of things that you think appropriate, especially Salomet's Ring.

You may want to try your luck at looting the Armory in Gran Soren. Or you may not. My advice is don't be greedy, make it two trips.

If fighting a Chimera, kill the snake first, then the goat. Do not just try to kill it all at once. You grab on and you hack away until you get some decent power.

I decided, I'll just pick the class that sounds cool. And that's how I became a Magick Archer when I could and had a blast (oh explosive rivet, what fun we had). That said the Magick Archer isn't for those who play the stat game. It's highest rate of growth is Magick defense, which is great for maybe a level or two, but not viable for a long term stat game of Dogma.

They also are entirely incapable of killing Metal Golems.
That's the worst thing to find out balls deep in the Everfall.

If your a class that can use a bow buy a finger of the maker arow it can kil any enemy with one hit. Thers a quest early on that will take threw the ressting place of a drake an enemy you normaly can't defeat unless your high level. But if you have the arow you can wipe it our and recive a ton of exp and some rare items that you can craft some of the best stuff in the game with.

True, not much I can do about them, hundred kisses was useful and then I use mad climbing skills for that center disk, eventually the Ranger I had with me got the idea and eventually I got there. Not as much fun as the rest, but it went well enough considering.
