Dragons live in the Enderworld, which is where Endermen come from (when they're not coming to the real world via EnderPortals.)

Dragons?

Notch is clearly just trying to cash in on Skyrim with this. Bethesda should take him to court.
*chuckles*
Because clearly, Bethesda is the only company who ever put DRAGONS into fantasy setting.
They totally own that shit!

Well, no, not really.

Example:
Its like someone who likes the videos Yatzhee does, really loves them so he does the same kind of thing, quite similiar with the same ideas hinting always at the original. It's not that bad actually. It's probably called a tribute or something.
But then at some point he starts making money with it and then things become more and more shades of grey. Does Yatzhee have a right to complain about them, arguing some kind of copycat is stealing his ideas? Difficult point.
Anyway dragons aren't copyrighted I guess, still as big sleeping "dragon like" company as Bethesda I would start to rise my eyebrow, considering there was the peculiar relase date (maybe moved now, quite strategically done) and some other scrolly thing.
Oh well, the whole point of name trademark is a bad thing and should be dropped altogether, the more I think about it the more conviced I am.

It amazes me the degree to which people are intent on hating Notch. Dragons have been planned for well over a year. And not in a wishy-washy sort of way - he never said when they'd happen, but he's consistently maintained that they would happen at some point.

There are dragons in mods, but most of them are pretty lackluster. Hopefully this will be suitably impressive.

Oh, and I definitely remember him mentioning the possibility of riding them in the past (could partially explain why saddles are so insanely rare).

Personally, I'm hoping we're going to see the end-game goal sort of thing he was talking about a while ago. While there's plenty to do in Minecraft and it's fun to just build and everything, it'd be neat if there were some reason to enchant weapons and make potions beyond convenience. As it stands, there's not really a whole lot of need to do either. None of them look like they'll be so incredibly useful that they'll be essential for overcoming the existing obstacles (nor should they - we don't need another essential resource to worry about at all times), so it would really be nice to see some bigger challenges that require these things. Right now you get hold of diamond tools and it's a sort of "well, now what?" situation. Enchantment adds some more to that and I imagine dragons will produce some useful resource, but then the question becomes "well, now what?" again regarding whatever dragons produce. Something that feels suitably end-like would be neat, even perhaps granting a perk that makes the gameplay more convenient without requiring a lot of farming (a potion you only have to take once, tools that never break, an infinite-use ender pearl, or the like). Nothing that would be required to get, but something that would aid in making the game more game-y, as he's stated he's trying to do.

The release date was moved pretty much as soon as they realized it was at the same time as Skyrim. This was well before the lawsuit.

And I cannot believe that people are seriously suggesting that he's stealing the idea of dragons from Bethesda. I could see thinking it's a sort of fuck you to Bethesda (except it isn't, since these dragons have been planned for over a year), but actually suggesting it's a "tribute" or "copycat"? It's dragons. This is like suggesting he ripped off Dante by including a facsimile of hell.

Who seriously cares about that stupid lawsuit, I don't know. I just know I don't care.
It's just interesting that Notch himself wanted to have the same day as the Sykrim relase date. He said that in his very own blog. It's not a conicidence, Notch said that himself.
It is simply very odd. It's like leaving a bad taste in your mouth after a magnificient diner.
Please don't get me wrong, I like Notch, he seems like a cool guy. But you know the proverb, when you play with the big (Bethesda) dragon, be prepared that he might bite...

Oh, concerning dragons:
I agree with you. Everyone can have dragons in his game. Someday that will change and we will have stupid "draconic" (pun intended) trademark laws protecting the dragon but not right now.
Oh and Dante's Hell can be used freely because it is too old, is it? The text and the ideas only have a copyright thingy for I don't know that excatly, 80 years after the author died? I don't remember, well I honestly I don't know and I almost don't care. It's a very stupid copyright trademark law thing.

It's at least a hundred years after the work is first published at this point, might be higher (it's been going up pretty consistently for at least the last fifty years). And dragons are certainly in that same category seeing as the concept is thousands of years old.

Notch wanted to have it on 11.11.11 because it's a neat date. He didn't want it on that day expressly because Skyrim was launching. In fact, he changed the day because Skyrim was launching, so I'm not really sure what you're talking about. He wasn't messing with Bethesda in the first place.

Actually there already is a Dragon mod and its pretty cool IMO.

Its a nice addition but I hope he adds the Aether and Amazopack mods before this. Also I hope that they're massive dragons capable of raining down destruction where ever they please. Like dragons in Mythology

I'm glad they're finally getting around to adding in things that modders have been toying with for quite a long time. Minecraft will be a terrific game when it's actually finished.

Unfortunately, seeing how Notch has been talking of late, I suspect this has more to do with flipping some kind of bird to Bethesda, than actually doing something because it's going to be a great gameplay addition. Which, ultimately, is a dick move considering 1.8 and 1.9 have had glaring holes that fans are begging to be filled.

Oh well. Better late than never, I guess.

Ye gods, guys. Way to get defensive over something silly. First off, no one owns dragons, and Notch planned them way ahead of time, anyway, blah blah and so on.

But the date? I'm guessing he changed it *to be amusing.* Because it'd be funny if his dragon update came out at the same time as a much-awaited dragon-based game. Because it's entertaining.

Dragons have been planned for about a year now, dude. I really doubt that.

I could be mistaken, but the update you're talking about is the release date, and it's been pushed back a bit.

"The full release is scheduled to launch November 18th, 2011, during MineCon."
dude Notch hints at adding everything into minecraft

you can't hide behind something as stupid as that

Should be neat. Would be awesome if you could use it's hide / teeth for armor and weapons. Maybe even some potion stuff too.
Yeah, he's been cracking down on the combat pretty hard as of late.

The new fortresses in the Nether have new creatures that drop items you can use to enchant your weapons and armor. I have the feeling we are gonna see a lot of that in the future.

I'm not hiding behind it. I'm just providing info that's been known to Minecraft fans for quite a while. I don't swing either way when it comes to the lawsuit.

Besides all of that, what's with people claiming that Bethesda should sue over this? Bethesda doesn't own the exclusivity rights to having dragons in their games. They're just a general fantasy species. Notch can put dragons into the game if he wishes, just like he could put elves or dwarves in.

my point is fairly that notch has said a lot about what he might be putting in the game in the end anything could end up in there

this is just rigurous timing

It is a pretty bad time for this particular update, I won't deny that. But really, he's just listening to a lot of the fans' ideas when it comes to new features. For example, dragons have been one of the most requested things this past year, as has a sky dimension and an Adventure mode. He's adding all three.

I still believe it's got nothing to do with provoking Bethesda, though. I think he's catering to the fans' requests with this one. That isn't to say I fully support him. He's kind of making a joke about the whole suit, what with posting it on his Twitter and proposing a Quake 3 game, and really, is joking about something that Bethesda takes this seriously truly the best course of action?

I think not.

He's probably going to make a parody of Skyrim in Minecraft.

Instead of playing as the "Dragonborn" in the cold lands of "Skyrim" in Bethesda's game, we can play as the "Dragonspat" in the cold lands of "Frezinmyaarsof*" in Minecraft. If Notch did that, I would give him a standing ovation!

*If you don't get the joke, look at the name really carefully.
