Yes, Square-Enix have officially announced that the prequel to the game with the weirdest ending in gaming history, Drakengard (known in Japan as Drag-On Dragoon), has been localised and will be available on PS3 in North America and Europe sometime in 2014 (it will be released in Japan on December 19, 2013).

Here's the trailer from Tokyo game Show with official subtitles (the final game will be dubbed).[footnote]The song is called "This Silence is Mine" by Chihiro Onitsuka.[/footnote]

From Square-Enix Europe:
http://eu.square-enix.com/en/blog/drakengard-3-coming-ps3-2014

And for the US:
http://www.playstationlifestyle.net...next-year-check-out-the-announcement-trailer/

And the official western website. [http://www.drakengardgame.com/]

It appears the US version will be available as both a physical copy and as digital download while the European version will only be available as digital download. However, this is the PS3 so you can just import copies without having to worry about region lock (SE haven't said anything about it).

No information on whether the game will be censored (Drakengard 1, 2 and to a much lesser extent Nier were all censored in some way) or if it will feature dual audio. However, considering the fantastic English dub for Nier I'm not too worried.

And here's the original trailer which features some gameplay for those who missed it (there is no Engish version).

For any information regarding the game and its development, Siliconera [http://www.siliconera.com/tag/drakengard-3/] have basically documented and reported on every piece of news regarding Yoko Taro's new insanity project since it was first announced.

That dragon is moe uguuu~

It makes me wonder if in the dub if they are going to keep the childish voice or go for something more western.

I already preordered the Japanese version, but I'll be the English release too, just for the hell of it. I just hope there aren't any major edits; word of mouth on that sort o thing can drive off a lot of the audience for a game like this.

I also really wish I could get the novel that comes with the special edition. Preorders on the thing sold out at every place that ships to me in a matter of hours, so I don't have much chance of ever getting my hands on it, but I really want that book, especially considering how much important background material was in Grimoire Nier.

Alright, awesome! I just hope they have the changing weapons from the first game.
I LOVE that physical manifestation of increasing power. I topped out all the weapons in Drakengard 1 because of it.
(And to those who may be curious, you get NOTHING for this exhausting task)

Yes, changing weapons is returning and you can even change them during combat.

Weapon upgrades (they change in appearance too) and weapon stories are also returning.

I REALLY loved/hated the first two games in that 'flawed as hell, but there was that 'SOMETHING' there that made me want to keep playing'.

I did indeed. I was quite the motivated little youth when it came to my video games. Sadly it ruined the game for me, I can't play anymore even today. (SOOOOO many reruns of the first big open level..)

Here's an interesting interview with Takamasa Shiba, producer of Drakengard 3.

He has some interesting things to say about the current state of JRPGs, the prices of game production, niche titles and the sensitivity of western culture in relation to Japanese games. He stresses that he doesn't want the game to be censored.

You can see the gameplay and weapon switching in action here. You can also see Zero use her badass Intoner ability at 8:06.

Although the trailer made me rock hard. I would need to be able to play the others before I bother buying this game.

Can I do this?

D3 is specifically designed to appeal to both fans and newcomers of the series.

The first two games had some rather horrible gameplay but were still very memorable due to their weirdness.

These two LPs are great if you want to know the story without playing them:

http://lparchive.org/Drakengard-2/
Or you can play them yourself, whichever you prefer.

The other game in the series is Nier for PS3 and 360. It's a sequel to one of the non-canon (and weirdest) endings of the first Drakengard and a very good game, so I recommend you do play it if you're interested.

I really liked the first one but the second was... ok at best. Maybe it was the older main character I could relate to. I'll likely get this one too. Really hoping it's more like the first.

I did too. So much grinding the first stage due to due to enemy count and ease to kill. The weapon leveling system being based on enemies killed was probably not the greatest idea.

I don't know, by the time I unlocked the final ending, I sort of became numb to the weirdness but somehow compelled to continue.

Thanks man I may well give this series a go.

The question is this: Will it be DA:O or Witcher Levels of mature? I hope DoD3 will be full on mature since this may actually get people noticing Japan as finally catering to the HBO crowd

This game has the same director (Yoko Taro) as the first game and Nier.

It will still retain similarities and themes to the previous games but will feature enough differences to be its own thing and feel unique.

-le gasp- Holy shit, what is this? ANOTHER Drakengard 3 topic on the escapist? Color me pleasantly surprised. From what i've read about this game they are going the right way with the atmosphere and characters by taking more cues from the twistedness of Drakengard 1...that's all i need to jump into this one.

Yet, the escapist news time don't seem to have commented on this game at all...what are they afraid of I wander?

There actually is a reason they explained behind that: Mikhail (The Dragon) is actually still only a child. Yep...even the Dragons children are motherfucking huge.
