Just a few questions. I picked up a Dreamcast today, I won't say for how much, I've already been threatened >_> but,

1. What exactly is the average price of a Dreamcast?
2. What are some good games for the Dreamcast that haven't been ported to another system already?
3. Any quirks I should know about? ...Does it light on fire like an Xbox used to? (I didn't really pay much attention to anything when the dreamcast was around.)

Thanks.

Average price? Probably under 50 dollars with a big box of games if you keep your eye peeled on Ebay or Craigslist. As for good games you have Giga Wing (I or II), Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue (I or II), Powerstone (I or II), Record of Lodoss War, Crazy Taxi, and of course the Marvel vs or Capcom vs games, Jet Grind Radio, House of the Dead, Typing of the Dead, Bangai-O, and there are more but those are what I'm coming up with off the top of my head and some have certainly been ported. As for quirks, well it had a lot of peripherals like the keyboard, there was a fishing reel, and VMUs are an odd sort of beast but there is nothing like the red ring of death. In fact it was quite the sturdy and rugged little system all in all.

The Dreamcast is sort of old, I remember playing some sh!tty games on it. I did like the controller however. This is after Nintendo 64 and its wierd controller.

I recognize a lot of those games from other systems XD

I'd definitely buy Skies of Arcadia if I didn't have it on the Gamecube. Great game :D

Thanks for all that. I'll look into it. Just kinda see what all I missed experience wise.

I always wanted a Dreamcast, but my parents would never buy me one because they (correctly) thought that it would fail like the Saturn.

I still kind of want one, but it's kind of hard to justify because most of the games I would have wanted for it ended up being ported to the PS2 or Gamecube.

The Dreamcast will forever, and always be my favourite console.

I'm even the creator of the official Dreamcast fan club on the escapist, however it only has one other member, so please join if you want to.

Just search for the escapist's official Dreamcast fan club.

Now, to your questions.

1 - Average price? i don't know in dollars, only in GBP.

2 - Shenmue, Jet set (Grind) Radio, Toy commander, Seaman, Silver, Typing of the dead, Chu chu rocket, D2, illbleed, Elemental gimmick gear, Record of Lodoss war, Blue stinger, Outtrigger, Cannon spike, Psychic wars, Spawn in the demons hand, Sword of the berserk guts rage, jojo's bizzare adventure, Power stone 1+2 (was on the PSP though, but not on any actual consoles other than DC) Project justice, Maken X, Soul calibur, Omikron the nomad soul, Confidential mission, Grandia 2 (the best version, the ps2 version is pretty bad) Slave zero, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram.

(FYI, I haven't played all of these, but these games are worth looking out for at least)

3 - The disc reading sound is very loud. If you have a PAL version of the console you can play backup's without mod chip. The space on a vmu isn't that big, so invest in at least two. The official dreamcast gun isn't available in the US, though you can buy third party ones (it's worth buying for house of the dead 2 alone). Dreamcast games are suppose to look pretty good on VGA, so if you have a monitor, that's something to consider. Online has been disabled since 2002, however if you can find a hard to find broadband modem you can go onto the scthack server for Phantasy star online (I also hear that their's servers still up and running for quake 3 as well). Import Shenmue 2, and Headhunter, they are worth it. Blue stinger is infamous for being a very love it, or hate it game, so do some research on the game before deciding to purchase it. Oh, and one more thing...the ring: terrors realm frikken sucks!

Okay i think that's all, have fun with it!

Sonic Adventure 1+2
Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
Quake 3: Arena
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Crazy Taxi
Shenmue
Soul Calibur
ChuChu Rocket!
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Jet Grind Radio

It's fairly cheap, you can buy it for around $25 if you have a nostagia gaming store nearby.
The controller takes a couple of days to get used to. It's weird, but its an Xbox 360 controller with no bumpers and one analog stick.

I'm not sure what the street value for one is. They're not super common anymore so if yours is in good shape and you wanted it, then don't stress paying a little extra. It's a quality built system honestly.

Games: Shenmue 1 and 2, Soul Calibur, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Hydro Thunder (trust me, it's cool), Tokyo Xtreme Racer.

Quirks: Omg, that stupid memory stick thing.. in the controller, you have to change the battery out at least once a year and when you pull the battery you lose ALL save files. So plan to start and finish your games within a year.

ALSO ****** Very important. Don't ever push all four of the game buttons at once or you'll reset the system. It's a convienent way to do a reset but at times is also annoying if you accidentally do it in the middle of a game.
