Drugs and Computers

Hello fine upstanding members of The Escapist.

I have been thinking for some time on the matter of drugs and computer games and what the people on the escapist opinions are on the matter. How many of you people would actually admit to using them whilst you played computer games? I am not trying to ask what people are doing or why they do it but merely if they do. This is because a large number of people that i see online generally make a plethora of cannabis related comments and whilst playing MW2 the most popular callsigns seem to be the ones related to smoking such as Joint Ops and Blunt Trauma.

I also find that whilst out and discussing games with people i find in pubs, that most of them also seem to be the sort of people who are regular users stating how "When i get home I am gonna go smoke a big colombian drug lord style reefer whilst slammin' my mate at pro evo!".

Do you think that playing computer games is type of side effect to smoking weed? Or is it possible that sitting around and playing games makes you want to smoke? I know that those statements are very sweeping and generalised and I would like to point out that I am not trying to start a witch hunt as, to be quite frank, I don't give two hoots what you do in the privacy of your own home. I ask merely out of interest to see how much the drug community and the gaming community overlap.

I have no idea as I do not take or have ever expierenced experimental & illegal drugs.

However drunken gaming is always fun.

Marijuana is not addictive. Alcohol is more addictive AND does more damage to you in the long run. Caffeine is more addictive than Marijuana too.

You really like the word, "whilst," don't you? Anyway, yes, I have smoked ganja and played games online multiple times, although it's not a regular thing for me. It's not that gaming makes you want to smoke, it's that smoking makes you want to game. Really, there's nothing you can do alone that's more fun than playing certain games high. Not even masturbation. I mean, you have not LIVED until you've played Rez HD and Geometry Wars 2 under the influence.

I do indeed love the word whilst. Without it my life would be meaningless and unhappy.

I used to back in my teenage years. Gave it up though. It holds no interest for me anymore. The pot, not the games, of course. Besides, how the hell else were we supposed to finish the endurance races in Gran Turismo 2?

Marijuana is not addictive. Alcohol is more addictive AND does more damage to you in the long run. Caffeine is more addictive than Marijuana too.

Ah ha! another person who is not stereotypical over Marijuana. People really should look into Marijuana before they pass as it off as the bad drug. Also, Marijuana is not a gateway drug, it's the people that believe that. I would never go on to do anything harder than Marijuana. Just clearing that up.

EDIT: Also Marijuana can actually help certain diseases/genetic problems/illness etc. In America they actually have "Cannabis Vendors" for people who have Cannabis prescribed by a Doctor.

This is exactly how I feel! I have never been smoking and thought "Hmm... this is nice. I bet it would also be nice to down pills or snort up powders!"

Also, those people who go "Oh my god I'm so high/drunk" in my experience never are, but want people to think they're cool. And it's pretty pathetic.

OT: I don't really play games high, as I get way too out of it to focus on a game, however drinking and gaming is the best. Drunken L4D2 is absolutely amazing.

I agree with you about the "gateway drug" thing, Marijuana just happens to be the first thing those types of people try, they start small and get bigger with their addictions. They just need to constantly get that peak of being high and once marijuana starts to not perform they move to another drug.

I've never smoked pot, partially because I'm terminally uncool and don't know any dealers, and partially because apparently it tends to aggravate anxiety issues, and I have enough of those, thank you.

But I drunk game a lot.

EDIT: Hey, maybe I should answer the questions. One of my friends smokes pretty regularly because she likes how it feels. She plays video games to destress and smokes to destress, so they go together well.

I'm a recreational marijuana user, and I despise those fucks who play FPS' just to say 'I'm so high right now'

Anyway, FPS' are far too stimulating to enjoy or play properly on drugs, you would want a more cerebral, easily paced game such as Grim Fandango or Myst. Both are fun on drugs.

Anyway, as I always say, moderation in all things. Those people who smoke every day just turn into mental zombies, light up once a week at most.

OT: I can't see how drugs would get you into gaming, or vice versa. If you do one or the other though, you're likely to do them at the same time at one point.

It is indeed a snatcher avatar that you spy. I will also say that i did get very stoned whilst playing that game and it did add to the suspense quite a bit. Maybe it was because my parents were in the next room but none the less, it was a most entertaining experience.

That's debatable. I know that, chemically speaking, marijuana does not literally cause your body to crave more of it. But the feeling of being on it? That's a very different matter. If you enjoy anything like that a lot over a period of time then it becomes "addictive" in the sense that if you stopped it would feel weird not having the sensation and you would start to crave it. Any enjoyable sensation is craved if you like it enough/get used to it and you don't get it for a little while.

I'm very, very anti-marijuana but that's because of my cousin and our family's horrible experiences with it, but try not to see this as anti-weed stuff.

Plus I know that parents/police/people who don't want kids doing drugs do make up a lot of stuff about marijuana, but it's just to try and keep them from breaking the law and making a very bad and (in my experience) dangerous choice.
