I almost bought myself a DS today, but realised I knew nothing of its capabilities or its games.

So, for those of you that own a DS, why should I buy one? Alternatively, why should I not buy one?

The DS is a very unique system. I don't know about you, so I don't know your preferences, however, I will tell you what I can. The DS has N64 like graphics, slightly smoother, slightly better textures, etc. It has a good speaker, so sound is pretty good. The major aspect, obviously, is the Touch Screen. The touch screen allows for some awesome games, like "Trauma Center." It is also implemented well with games that are not wholly focused on the touch screen. There is a wide veriety of games, depending on your preferences. Games from larger or more renouned series also make the jump well to the DS. Overall, it is a good buy, and also has good battreyr life.

As for why you shouldn't, some of the games can be more kiddy, but the PSP has that as well. Sorry, can't give you a real negative reason, as I enjoy the system.

Lots of reasons to buy a handheld, the main one for me is that I spend 15 hours a week on the subway. I have both a Nintendo DS and a Sony PSP. They both have some qualities that make them worth buying. Your biggest concerns should not be hardware, but rather the games they play.

It's no secret that the PSP focuses on the 18-25 year old crowds with role playing, racing, and sports titles. If those are the games you like PSP is a good system for you. PSP also has a lot more in the way of internet communications software; but that's something which I shamefully never use.

Nintendo seems to be focused on games that everyone can enjoy. They pretty much do it all, but their console has some constraints from the hardware itself. Don't expect technically advanced hand-held games like GTA: Vice City Stories to be released on DS anytime soon.

What Nintendo's platform lacks in power it makes up in sheer volume of games. As with anything in life, the more of something you have; the more crap you have to sift through to find the gems. That being, in this case, sorting the good games from the bad.

If you are into platformers, puzzle games, and a few RPGS, there are some titles on the Nintendo that will suit you well. The unique control scheme seems to have given Nintendo a monopoly on rhythm games.

That doesn't mean that both platforms don't have some real duds though. On the contrary; last year was so sad for the PSP I almost sold mine. I am glad I didn't though. This year is quite a bit better, and I have a feeling that they are just going to keep bringing out solid new titles like "Patapon" and the new "God of War." Nintendo has a habit of releasing ten versions of every game in their library (see Soduku and Brain Training games) and only really shine when they release a solid Nintendo franchise game like Mario or something.

I purchased one because I wanted a hand held system, and the PSP didn't carry the games I was attracted to. The DS, however, did have quite a few games I new for a fact I would enjoy, as well as a price tag I could handle. Plus it came in pink.

I bought into the system because it was unique in game play (the stylus and microphone), contained games I enjoyed (Cooking Mama, Pokemon, Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, My French Coach, and others), and it was affordable. The fact that I could go back into the Gameboy Advanced games, should I decide to play some of those, was a big plus as well.

In the end, I got the DS for the games I knew I would enjoy.

The DS doesn't have the most advanced hardware, but it also has no loading times. There's a lot of games, in a lot of different genres. And there's a lot of great homebrew. Playing Quake 2 while I travel to work never gets old.

Sure, there's a lot of "kiddie" games, but there's quite some "mature" games too. And while playing Rocket Slime or Kirby Canvas Curse in public might look less cool then playing Generic Tough Manly Racer 3, it's still a lot of fun.

I'd tend to recommend the DS over the PSP every time. Looking through the PSP library, there aren't that many games in there that I want to buy, whereas the DS has all sorts of titles that appeal to me. My current collection consists of: Phoenix Wright, Pokemon Diamond, Advance Wars: Dark Conflict, Elite Beat Agents, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Metroid Prime Hunters and Final Fantasy III and there are still games out there that I want to get but can't afford.

But the DS has a game even manlier than Generic Tough Manly Racer 3. It has Contra 4. THE manliest game ever.

I bought FF:T War of the Lions and a PSP (I got the Darth Vader version, heh) on the same day, and haven't touched my DS since. Also I had lost my MP3 player to the washing machine the previous day so a PSP was a no-brainer. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

It is totally worth it to play any of the Pheonix Wright or Apollo Justice Attorney games. I would full-heartedly reccomend them to anybody. They are about 500 miles from any semblence of Portal Humor, but it's still there and really funny nonetheless. There are a few gameplay issues, but the sheer beauty of the game's dialouge along with the ability to play as a lawyer totally makes up for it. Oh, and watching Law and Order will help you none.

I'd also reccomend Pokemon Diamond (most fun I've had in several years with any Pokemon title).

Kirby Canvas Curse is also a must, as well as Super Mario Brothers.

Sweet! Another Ace Attorney fan! I play the games for the characters and the hilarious dialogue. Are you excited for Perfect Prosecutor?

I'd reccomend "The World Ends Without You" For a really crazy battle system that spans both the top screen with your partner and the touch screen with the character you control. Plus, the dialogue's top notch and the music's fantastic.

I have like 25 DS games. I also have a cart reader so I can download ROMS... yeah I know it's illegal, and everyone will hate me, but I'm running out of money. Though, you can put moonshell on it and do cool homebrew stuff.

Anyways, I LOVE my DS. Lots of great 2D games. I recommend one. Also, whomever mentioned phoenix wright up there, I totally agree. Those were really enjoyable "games".

Kirby Squeak Squad!!!!!

Yay for Kirby!

Also, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Mario 64 DS, and Front Mission.
I second all of those.

yeah, as some people have pointed out, it's really up to the games. I don't condone piracy, but you can download an emulator and demo the different games that way. It's not as fun, but it's let you try it out.
I have both the DS and PSP, and I honestly play the DS way more. I did, however just buy the FF:Tatics for the PSP, so I may dust it off.
If you do get a DS and you have a loved one you spend lots of time with, get them one too. A great many of the games have multiplayer stuff that only requires on cart to play. My fiance and I get into name calling matches over Bran Age and the New Super Marios mini games.

Yes yes yes. Very few characters I like more than my pink fluffball of DEATH!
For sure, I think squeak squad had the best story ever. Someone stole Kirby's cake so he goes on a murderous rampage through 8 worlds to get it back.
