DS versions and compatibility with games

So I was gonna pick up a used DS so that I may play the new Pokeman game and any others that catch my interest. However, with all the differnt kinds of DS versions out there I wasnt sure if the original (which is also the cheapest used) one can play all the latest games that came after it? Obviously I know it wont play the 3ds games but thats alright

Okay, the original wording of my answer was really freaking weird, I'm gonna change it.

Any Nintendo DS system, be it the original, the DSi, or even the 3DS, can play games that were released for the Nintendo DS.

It can play all the DS games that are marked as DS.

I know because I'm playing Black right now on a classic DS.
