Duckhunt is the pinnacle achievement of videogames. No, that's not an overstatement. It is a dark tale, full of deep psychological twists and graphics that rival looking outside of the TV. But let's look at this in depth, shall we?

Behold the glory.

First off, I'll start with the story of this masterpiece. You play as the unnamed, unseen protagonist of the game, seeing him through a mission of revenge. In between the action scenes, we recieve the information that a serial killer murdered the protagonist's family while wearing a mask of a demonic duck. This sends our hero over the edge. He goes on a compulsive series of attacks on the ducks that represent his inner demons and the vision of his failings over his family, "aided" by his dog. Now this is where the writing really picks up. the dog appears to help our hero, though if you miss your enemies, he laughs at you, taunting the protagonist over his inability to protect his family. This shows the lack of balance in the hero's mind, demonstrating just how fractured the serial killer's attack has made him. Also, this details the ambiguity of the characters in this game. Is the dog real and just that much of a jackass? Or is the dog a manifestation of the hero's subconscious that shows his inner conflict? Only the player can decide. There is also an ending, which I won't spoil here, that leaves you to decide on the ultimate fate of all the characters.

Now, while the story is brilliant, a game isn't a game without visuals. And these visuals are spectacular. I'm not good enough to describe them, so I'll just show you:

I mean, look at that. The detailing in grass. The realistic lighting on the tree. The photorealistic representation of the dog. It all culminates in a magnificent view that rivals the Sistine Chapel in terms of sheer beauty. I'm going to leave it at that for the graphics, because they clearly speak for themselves.

The controls of the game are equally brilliant. It utilises the Nintendo Zapper to aim and fire at your mortal enemies, and does so in a way that manages to balance realism and fun. The recoil that comes off the gun is like that of firing a high powered handgun, Dirty Harry style, but there's no reload mechanism to interfere with the action of engaging you archnemises in epic showdowns to the death. The Zapper also achieves one-to-one accuracy when you're aiming, which I believe was created using either alien technology or magic. Overall, the controls for this game are simply fantastic.

All in all, this game is perfect, with it's excellent story, sharp visuals, and brilliant controls, and should be played by anyone who considers themselves a true gamer. Yes, this review is a joke. However, the game is pretty fun, and very basic, but not in a bad way.

Literally Lol'ed, great work there, brings back memories and adds a dark twist to an old classic. Got sick of being laughed at by that damn dog too

I always took the dog as a manifestation . . . and let's not forget the tiny ammount of ammo he takes into each strike, making it all the more real just how little "time" he believes he has to avenge them.

Seriously though, great stuff man, and me personally, I just love Duck Hunt regardless . . . one of the first videogames I ever played, and still one of my all time favorites. Now I just need to get one of those NES emulator box things that they sell at the gamestore in the mall. NES + AV cable not cable connection = beautiful

Thanks guys.

I'm glad this went over so well for something I came up with while I was on my bike.
