Have you ever known someone physically or mentally impaired/different(or anything in that line, really)? What are your experiences or thoughts about it?

I once had a friend who I was told were hyperactive or somesuch. I had occasionally met him like an acquaintance thorough my childhood, but It wasn't until at age 14-15 or so I actually befriended him, he was two years younger.

The easy way to describe him would be: Slightly behind in maturity, careless, spontaneous, and with a truckload of energy.

With years upon years of experience with physical activities, he never ran out of ideas. We had loads of fun playing with car tires, building tree houses and all that. I had trouble keeping up with him though, and at times he'd be socially awkward enough to call me often to ask me to hang out when I needed a break. But all in all, just a little tolerance was enough to see how fun he was. Sadly we lost contact after a year when I moved house and he changed to another school because of a seriously bad rep at the current one. It's sad because people really didn't need to just see the bad side of it.

As for the title, I named it after the character from Dreamcatcher, for obvious reasons. Sue me for lack of creativity.

Now I'm really itching to hear your stories, or at least thoughts.

There's a few mentally disabled people, who seem to visit my college every Wednesday. But I'm not sure what they are doing there though.
I suspect it's probably just a class they take part in.

Also I myself am a little bit autistic.
However this isn't really noticable. So hardly anyone knows.

So did your acquaintance have a case of ADHD or something? Did his hyperactiveness get him in trouble at your old school or did people not like him for being different?

I used to help out special pre-school children. It was the most rewarding job I have had so far and I always enjoyed helping them out.

I befriended a kid who was mentally retarded and severely handicapped when I was a real little kid, like 9 or 10. One day he asked me for my orange soda, and his mom packed him terrible lunches every day, so my Grandma used to give me stuff I could take to him to eat, including orange soda every day. Then, one day, he just left, and I never saw him again. For the life of me, I can't even remember his name now.

While I never really understood it, there are many mentally impaired people at my school. I suppose the school has some really good program for teaching them how to function but they still take up unnecessary space.

My cousin has ADHD and really bad epilepsy, and by really bad I mean he has to sleep on the floor because he doesn't like falling out of bed when he has fits every night.

I suspect ADHD, I can't know for sure though.

He didn't get into more trouble than anyone else as far as I know. People just treated him with hostility or laughed.

That mostly describes my friend that's afflicted with ADHD.

He's a great guy, makes ya laugh alot. Normally people either think it's funny or get annoyed very quickly. Or they might not take notice to it..

My other friends get annoyed quickly -.-

Friend with a missing leg in primary school. Not really disabled though.
Recent acquantaince, a drummer who can only move his hands and head, but he's pretty upbeat (haha) and the only noticable difference is that he can't go up stairs etc.
I have Manic Depression, but that's a whole new can of worms.
Oh, and I knew someone with ADHD or similar in primary school, and he eventually got kicked out for starting too many fights. I was pretty much the only person he liked, 'cause even back then I had absolutely no problems with his wackiness.
