Perhaps they don't want it released BECAUSE of how bad DN:F was.
I think this might be on to something. The last thing Gearbox probably wants to see released is a fan-made remake that reminds people of how goddamn awesome DN3D was, and how badly DNF suffers by comparison.

Because if you didn't play it, believe me when I say this: DN3D was awesome.
I agree with the idea of DN:F's failure to perform the reasoning for not wanting DN3D to be released, but I find it hard to follow your logic. It's not really that they're worried about a new game completely upstaging them and making Gearbox looking like idiots (despite the fact that DN:F's failure was only 10% their fault and that's not much). I'd think they just don't want to risk a repeat flop without making sure this is guaranteed to get people excited for the Duke IP to be revitalized again. Think about it. If Half-Life 2 Episode 3 ends up being a complete shitter, Valve isn't going to decide to remake the last game that worked and let fans just dress it up better for them or whatever. They'll be as insane as possible when it comes to testing that product and make sure their next project (remake or something new entirely) will overshadow the last project in a way that it will make people forget it existed... or at least not piss them off too much.

(sidenote: I use HL2E3 cuz that's the only thing I could think of where this scenario COULD happen, but it likely won't since Valve seems smart enough to test their games anyway).

You think after the fucking up Duke Forever so badly, Gearbox would want to a remake to be released, if only so people would stop talking about how bad DN:F was.

That's what I was thinking. If this game turned out to be good, it would provide a stark contrast to the missteps made by Gearbox on DN:F.

If Gearbox is really intending to keep Duke Nukem out there as a continuing franchise, this might not be the best move. (I know it wasn't their "decision", but it sounds like the terms of the license they offered might have gotten tightened or refined in some way that made the team's decision more or less inevitable.) I realize Gearbox is probably still making money on DNF, but a strong fan-release in the waning days of the ten+-year-late game could actually do a lot to keep the character in people's minds in a positive light.

I think they're more worried that this will highlight how much of a screw up they made over Forever. If people choose to go for a remake of a game as opposed to one they've sunk a lot of money into (anyone recall that really awful painting of Duke?) its kind of a slap in the face to them.

Gearbox probably put a clause in the license saying that the other Duke Nukem games, not made by Gearbox, can't be better than DNF, or even fun for that matter.

But more likely that they added that Duke is no longer allowed to hold more than two guns at once, and that health packs are banned from being used. Basically, saying that things that Duke Nukem fans wanted from DNF and didn't get can't be added, because that would mean that Duke Nukem fans would like the remake better than DNF.

Other than non-linearity and no boot kick, those are the big things that DNF lacked that made Duke Nukem 3D great.(The crude humor and vulgarity, weren't a part of it for me because I was too young to get it at the time.)

Well Gearbox your good will is fading away real quick.
I'm guessing they want the game signed over to them before release because that is the usual route IP holders want to take, and no self respecting dev will want to do that...

Well I hope they somehow get to a middle ground so we get to play a good Duke again.

Eh. Is sorta amusing to be delayed, I guess, but I wasn't that fussed on DN3D, TBH.

I mean, DN3D was "Doom, but with strippers". Yeah, there were quite a number of technical innovations, such as mirrors, full 3d movement, jetpack, water levels NV goggles, laser trip mines, freeze or shrink rays, trains, video cameras and so on, but the target audience didn't seem to care, and, TBH, neither did the level designers.

Doom had less to play with, so it was crafted more carefully. DN3D didn't need to be, cause it had strippers, and that's what mattered.

Sounds like Gearbox's license allowed them to block the release if they wanted to, probably for any reason. Why they decided to do so is anyone's guess, since the last thing that company needs right now is more bad press. This makes it look like they made a bunch of promises to these fans, got them all hyped up about getting the official go-ahead, then pulled the rug out from under them a year later. Even if they had a legitimate excuse, that's pretty weak.

Gearbox sucks.

Why get a remake when this: http://eduke32.com/ exists. All you need for it is $5.99 for Duke3D from GoG. Then bam! All the fun of Duke 3D (sans DOS) in delicious 2011-tastic 3072x2304.

For the record I have no investment in eduke32. I just think it's really fun.

Oh man, I'm not ready to saddle up for another fifteen-year-long wait. Anyone else thinking they should've just done this in the first place and throw Forever right where it belonged?

Correct if I'm wrong, but isn't DN3D public domain?

If that's the case, then Gearbox doesn't own shit.

I'd love to see a modern face-lift of DN3D, but this is pretty screwed up

I don't really see the point of remaking a game that's already perfectly fine, but oh well.
I see this as proof that Gearbox is working on more Duke Nukem titles and doesn't want this to interfere. Or they just don't want to look bad in comparison. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see.
