at least we all know what was actually happening
and all the joke videos of the design team etc were.. very close to what was going on...!
some other studio should just pick this up whip something together and throw it out on the market.. just becuase.
Hell, I bet they could release what they have for like $1 for each copy and probably make a mint :p But no way Take Two would let 3DR do that.

There is a well known, much feared (by developers) and often ignored (by management) term for this: Scope Creep.

Seriously, it's in Software Engineering management books from the 1970s.. and it still happens today.

Whilst I sympathize with the lead for wanting to make an awesome product, he really should have stuck to the design doc..(unless there wasn't one in which case the product can NEVER be considered to be finished)

One of the best games in recent years was Portal. It was brilliant because it was simple.

What would Portal have been like if it had Snow scenes, tonnes of scripted sequences and AI? The HL engine supports it all, but they held back and focused on making an awesome game.

It's easy to see who has been waiting for this and who started laughing at it years ago, just check how much bile is in the post.

Duke Nukem Forever... And ever... And ever...

Ahhh that never gets old! Too bad for all the members of that team, hopefully the game will be released one day.

...So it took so long because those guys were IDIOTS.
You're not making a giant masterpiece, you're making fucking duke nukem.
They apparently read the dozens of "Most badass character of all time" threads, and thought that this Duke Nukem title has to be the greatest thing to ever grace the gaming industry.

I agree though, we deserve to pay no more mind to them.

An interesting read. Quite frankly though I lay some more blame on the publishers. Why did they never finally come down and say, "Look: Either get this shit done by this date or find a new publisher!"? Or rather, say that BEFORE this year? I think by the time Quake 3 came out that they should have started laying the law down..

Basically it means never defining a specific goal or goals to a project. You don't restrict yourself and basically keep adding/removing things. It's basically a project with ADHD..

All that time and money, they could have made their own engine to run the game with, right? Seemed like this guy was just too eager to copy what everyone else was doing.

Wait, that's why? Because the lead designer acted like he was 12 years old with adhd in the design faze? Which is funny considering that's how old the game is. Probably killed a lot of the people on the project's careers. Imagine putting '12 years of nothing' on your resume.

I have no sympathy. I never really cared about duke nukem and even I can see this is about as stupid as it gets without actively slmming their own heads against a wall repeatedly.

Yeah working 12 years on a game with no deadline in sight is not a good idea.

It's a shame, because they could have made tons of money off of that game. And if he made Prey, then why would he be worried about if the game is going to be bad? Prey was not a very good game... at all.

I bet this George Broussard guy is like that with everything in life. Every new TV, computer, and dish washer to come out, he wanted. Problem is, without a job he can't get anything.

But maybe, the developers could possibly get work again. Show what they did with whatever they finished. I'm sure the game industry knows if the management was the problem or not.

the founders are crooks, plain and simple. they received money to finish a project and never was able to finish it. even without a due date, they still failed to turn out a product at all

Well, Duke Nuken is an orphan franchise now. Someone could adopt it, don't you think?

Hey, Bethesda!!!Are you there??
Great, Duke running around in an unstable game engine that randomly crashes, using the VATS targeting system and listening to uninspired voice actors' chatarcters ***** to one another about how goblins/mole rats chase them around the forest/wastelands.
