So, the game effectively took 2500 man hours to complete, given how many restarts and engine changes the devs went through.

My expectations are not particularly high, but then again they never were.

so it would have taken 1 man 500 years to finish building DNF...

And you did mean June 14, 2012, right?

It's really easy to say "WOW THOSE BASTARDS R LAZY", but look at the size of the two studios involved.

3,500 man-months over 10 years is about 30 people, which fits with the 35-employee status on the studio's wikipedia page. Gearbox, by comparison, has about 170 people (again, according to wikipedia). This is a huge difference and, strictly speaking, if 3d Realms DID have the larger staff, the game very well could have come out in 2-3 years.

I think DNF was delayed so long less because 3d Realms is full of useless tools, and more because they tried to bite off much, much more than a studio their size could realistically chew, but never had the sense to spit it out and try to eat something more sensible.

this will be the all time side splitting laughter if this game is gawd awful in the end. how can you even put out them kind of numbers with a straight face. how could the countless hands that worked on apparently waste 4000+ hours of work for nothing apparently DNF if it goes down as the game that should never have been made to be epic that would be some funny stuff.

So would this be the gaming industry's version of the Million Man March?

The Million Man Hours?

The Million Hours Programming?

to put into perspective. 100 devs worked for 12 months is 1200 months of work <.< so 2500 in 2 years seems resonable

for 3D Realms to have only worked on it for 4000 months after all those years must mean the studio has like 20-25 employees :(
