Problem was 3d realms was too perfectionist about it. The multiple engine changes, they'd get a map 99% done and then scrap it and start over from scratch, etc. At first it was just regular development hell, not getting the quake 2 engine when they needed it, then switching to Unreal. Then, as the anticipation built, they became overly anal and perfectionist about it so nothing was good enough for having been in development as long as it had, so it just kept getting pushed back. It didn't help that Daikatana, another eagerly anticipated game back in those days, was released to xbox hueg failure. Not wanting to have that fate, they were increasingly paranoid about releasing it as anything but perfection. If they got close to finished and then a new technology came out or new 3d engine or physics engine, etc.. suddenly that needs to be included.. pushes everything back.. because they don't want to release an outdated game by the time it comes out.Clirck said:
It really didn't help that they were self funded.. if they'd been funded by a publisher who set milestones and deadlines for them, it would have been released years and years ago, not as perfection but "good enough".
Now that they've caved since you know, perfection is impossible to attain.. hopefully it gets picked up by another developer, and it gets released as "good enough"..
Now will it be "good enough" for having waited 12 years? Hell no. You're going to have to accept that with how many times they started pretty much from scratch that the game as we'll see it will have only actually been in development for about 3-4 years realistically, and need to be judged by that standard rather than 12 years.
Will it be good? Probably.. depending on how much of it was finished before the other devs got to it it could be the best game you ever played (still not worth waiting 12 years for though). I mean with them being so anal about it, what they have done will probably be very very good, and the other devs that pick it up, since it won't be a labor of love.. might not do it justice.. hopefully all that's needed is some bug fixes and polish, maybe a few more maps and weapons.
In answer to the actual thread, I highly doubt that we will see the true Duke Nukem come to fruition. It's more likely that Take Two will either sell off the label to another publisher, or will give it to one of their own, more reliable, developers.
I, for one, am saddened. But it's not like this was a sudden upset. 3DR have had a long time to make the game, and you can't expect Take Two to keep throwing money at the team to make something that should've taken a quarter of the time it really took.
That said, in the back of my mind, I'd always held out hope for the Duke to come back into the gaming world and shake things up a bit.
To summarise, it's still likely that the Duke will return to PCs and consoles at some point in the future. But if he does, he won't be Duke exactly like we've known him.
