Why did this guy have this program already created?? Theres no way he could make that in 1 day, so he had to have already had it created.
I dunno, the trojan one of my friends used to crash the entire school system took a few hours. If you've got 8 hours on your final day, that's more than enough time to build it, but perhaps not to hide it.
crashing your school system and zeroing out every peice of data, backup and server in a company that definetly has more defences than a shool, are two different things. If this guy made something that complex that fast, he's amazing.
He might be that amazing, but the real question is, why did he get fired in the first place?

Given what he did, I'd be willing to cover the "didn't play well with others" square in any office pool.

actually the code for zeroing out a hard drive is pretty darn easy, especially in unix

everything the guy had done was pretty trivial and could easily be done in an hour, the full 8 hours was just over kill, most of the stuff he's doing is pretty basic shell commands.

i could probly write the script or something similar in no time

Nothing would have happened. Unless of course the "high availability" systems were not being backed up, which should be a criminal offense in itself if you're responsible for an entire nation's money. Other than that, the system would be down for a day or two while the problem was removed and previous day backups restored.

On the one hand, that's awesome in a strange sort of way. On the other, it's scary to think one guy could single handedly crash america's economy.
