I don't really know if this goes here or the game forum, since it's not a video game, so....

Experienced D&D players, hear my plea! (Short version below)

Here's the thing. Me and a few coworkers/friends are going to be starting a D&D campaign on Saturday. We had one going before but the guy who was DMing was sucking at it so now we are starting anew with a new DM. I played as a Warlock that time, and while it was fun, it wasn't for me. I've always loved playing a monk in RPGs, so that's what I'm determined to do this time... but here's the a catch.

The guy who's DMing isn't my friend. He's a coworker and he doesn't really hate me, but he and I disagree on a lot of things. Now, this week, BY ACCIDENT, something I started ACCIDENTALLY has caused him (and others, but they aren't important right now) to have to work 2 more work hours a day (from 6 hours to 8 hours now, and that was NOT MY INTENTION!!!!). I apologized for my COMPLETE ACCIDENT but he's giving cryptic warnings that my character's time in our campaign may now end up less than ideal if I'm not at my best. Unfortunately, I'm fairly new still at D&D and especially the Monk class, so I don't really know what my "best" is.

Long story short: I'm a newb player who needs help building a good monk so I can survive my DM's wrath.

I don't really need you guys to tell me what to do here if you don't want, I just need a good guide from somewhere. I tried looking some stuff up but all I found was a bunch of homebrew junk which isn't allowed (for the most part). And I know there's many ways to play monk, so the kind I want to be is a fairly straight-forward punch and tussle monk. Maybe a drunken master later on if I can. :D
