Dungeons & Dragons - Where to Begin?

First and foremost, the contact I have with The Forgotten Realms is a few hours into Baldur's Gate (the iPad version), the whole Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2, Dark Alliance 2 and quite a few novellas. As you can see, zero experience when it comes to the "real deal with Dungeons & Dragons".
I'm thinking about buying one of the D&D Forgotten Realms table top games, where should I start?

Try and find a group.
My friend started playing recently and he managed to find a group that meets up every Thursday evening, from what I hear it really keeps things organised and the more experienced players help getting used to it.
