Now make a massive scale Kinect and a huge TV, put them both in the desert and invite everyone in the world for a game of epic Kinectimals.

I do believe he said they were going for a world record, but it wasn't confirmed they actually made it...
Also, that guy needs a haircut.

The guy at the begin of the interview clarifies that it's a stunt for the 21th lustrum anniversary of their studentgroup/corporation.

Around 0:56 he tells some of their previous stunts: Playing Tetris on buildings, displaying phone text messages on buildings, and a LED cube where people could play a 3D version of Snake. They were trying to come up with ideas, when one mentioned they could try to build a giant controller and hopefully reach a world record.

The controller works with some kind of infra-red light. Standing on the button blocks it, and a recorder picks up the change and translates it for the NES.

After the stunt they plan to use it for introduction days for new students.

That's kinda it. Oh, and Dutch-language is called Dutch :p
On topic: That's awesome! A whole new take on motion games, eh? It's probably a whole lot more durable than the real NES controller as well, it looks solid like a tank.

There was no representative of the Guinness book of Records present, so it won't count as an official world record.

So um yeah, I was there...

That thing was awesome, except it's pretty damn hard to play Mario with 1 guy manning the D-pad and the other manning the A and B buttons

Didn't people in Groningen make like a 50-meters big 3d screen or whatever?

Are they trying to adapt the world to giants?

Though it is a bit heart breaking to see the look on the kids' faces as they play that.

I mean, all we see is something awesome, and from their faces it looks like they are playing something just plain old and weird.

I'm old.

I'm telling you all, this will be the end of mankind!
They'll keep building bigger and bigger NES controllers, until one day, they'll build a NES controller so big, that it will destroy us all!
Destroy us all!!!!
But it does looks rather cool anyways, and I want one.

To all duthc speaking escapist. As far as I know Tweakers.net [www.tweakers.net] is the best dutch technology/IT website ever.

Shame they didn't get to turn it into a world record.

Giant NES controller number 400 thousand. I'm happy to see some of my peeps kicking it oldschool, but come on how about a little more variety? How about an NES ADVANTAGE where you have to lean against the joystick with allllll your might? An NES MAX that's so big you can ride the analog divot in the center like the teacups at disneyland? An NES ZAPPER that can flash fry a turkey (so you'd better stand clear) let alone all the ducks on screen at once?! Or an NES ROB that could protect the streets of downtown tokyo?!?!? Don't be afraid to get creative guys! And why am I shouting?!? BECAUSE I CAN'T HEAR YOU FROM ON TOP OF THE NES WHERE YOU'D PLUG ALL OF THESE THINGS IN!!!!

Thankyou that is all.

Imagine the amount of wind power you'd need to clean out a disk for an NES that big...

According to the video, it isn't so much as a research thing or a project.

It's a publicity stunt.

Figures they'd be playing Mario, those Dutch really love their mushrooms!
We once did, but they're illegal nowadays. Some french tourist commited suicide after taking some mushrooms and that was enough incentive to just ban them outrightly. :(

OT: awesome! :) love me some nes

touché :D

being dutch myself i think that its pretty funny. and for the ones who are interrested about what they are saying in the video... nothing special. they created it for the anneversery from the school. they explain a bit how it works. adn that they probably will use it on open days for the school.

and for the ones who are complaing about the kids that are playing with a face like: 'whoa, these graphics sucks, why don't they have cod? this gmae is pretty dull'. i'm sorry, our youth is pretty fucked up.
