So I was just reading a thread on here about how people are sick of flashy graphic games, and would prefer a more complex a rich experence. And so I have decided to shamelessly plug a game that is quickly creaping up my "best game ever" list.

DWARF FORTRESS
"..featuring two modes of play, a distinct, randomly-generated world (complete with terrain, wildlife and legends), gruesome combat mechanics and vicious schools of carp."

So think Sim City, but drawn in ASIIC(sp?) art. With Seiges. And magma. And killer Unicorns (dont ask...).

Offical site is here http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ but if I have your attention head here first:

http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/

^Thats a newbie tutorial, and also contains the game client (Free, and only 15ish Mb to download). Start there and when you need more info head here:

(Please note I dident wright or create anything I have linked to, so claim no credit for it.)

Dwarf Fortress is amazing.

I'm rather proud of my latest fortress. Early on I decided this time (My last fortress having become a wretched hive after a Carp infestation in the nearby river reduced my dwarves to a solitary existence after multiple failed attempts to tunnel new entrances farther away from the rivers failed and trade caravans ceased to visit. No new immigrants. My dwarves steadily descending into lives of darkness as madness slowly crept into the underground city and eventually civil society dissolved into a bloodbath as maddened dwarves ran rampant through the hallways... that ended up alot longer than expected.) to build my fortress with the future in mind. So while those first few dwarves lived miserable lives at first where every second was spent digging massive rooms from rock and tunneling deeper and deeper into the mountain.

However it was worth it, as having been built with the future in mind now that more and more dwarves have immigrated in this has swiftly become my most successful fortress ever. So perfect infact that the merchants I have found beg *me* for my wares and products while less and less items they try to trade me are things I care about. My military is strong, my people happy, resources plentiful... it's starting to get boring.

I *like* failing. I mean just read the story about carp crazed dwarves... maybe it's about time to start a new fortress... hmm... maybe in a haunted forest that time, should be interesting.

God, this game is fun. It's really too bad that I just suck at parts of it. The nobles, diplomats, and strange job types really confuse me, and there's no real explanation for a few of them... Like, how do I do glassmaking? How do I make clothes? These are important things often neglected in DF tutorials, and I'm at a loss... Perhaps this can double as the Escapist DF support thread?

EDIT: Did not see this page the last trip through:

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/How_to_correctly_start_fortress_mode

This is INSANELY helpful.

yes this needs to double as the help thread!

I found the game so damned confusing when i started and i promptly gave up a good 20 mins later. i just have so little trouble making out what's happening with the ASCII graphics and i can't remember the damn buttons! not to mention the game is so complicated. but it seems like it's a very deep game if you have the time for it.

The graphics of the game depend on the version you have: some are ASCII graphics, but the version on the link he posted (the newbie tutorial one) has much better graphics. You can now tell your dorfs from your dogs!

I used to play DF a while ago, and was thinking of taking it back up.

I find that it used to be too easy if you found the right spot for your fort. Somewhere with wood, stone, clay and metals and you can pretty much do it easily.

What really used to bother me was the crappy care system. Is it any better, or do dwarves still leave your wounded war veterans to die of thirst constantly?

mine has little pictures for the dwarfs but there was still something eye straining about it's use of , and " to mark other things.
